This book is the first one I've come across that seems to be genuinely open-minded on the questions that are currently absorbing the running community: is there a 'natural' way to run, and if so, what is it? is forefoot striking better than heel striking? what kind of shoes are best? what is the ideal stride length? and what about nutrition?Peter Larson has looked quite hard at the genuine scientific research that has been done across a range of disciplines, to see which claims can be substantiated and which cannot. There are some surprises: not only is there no reliable scientific support for the classic categorization of runners into over-pronators, neutral runners and supinators (with corresponding shoe recommendations) but in some studies people did better (ie got fewer injuries) when running in the 'wrong' shoes.Larson also considers the contribution anthropology makes to understanding how humans evolved as runners, concluding that for persistance hunting a gait rather like Jeff Galloway's 'run/walk' was probably natural. But he also notes the significant differences between modern man and our ancestors---not least in the way that our feet have been altered by the time we reach adulthood simply by wearing modern shoes.This is by far the most objective look at the whole are I have seen, but that doesn't make it dry. Larson also uses anecdotal evidence from the great runners and coaches of the least hundred years to explore his topics, and his tone is consistently light and easy to read.Most telling of all, he avoids doctrinaire conclusions, accepting that there probably is no single 'right' way to run, no single shoe that's 'right' for every runner. His book offers information, guidance and suggestions, including a final chapter with somne specific ideas on everything from footstrike to nutrition; but in the end he concludes simply that just as people vary, so will their running styles, and they key is to use all the information to help you find what works best for you.

This is a very good follow up to 'Born to Run' and although I agree with several reviewers that the first. 40-50 pages of the book on the development of man was a bit tedious, I did read it all as the authors worked toward the expected detail on why we are better off in less heel developed shoes and a more natural mid to forefoot landing with shorter more efficient and less pounding mechanics and strides. The book is full of studies and historic quotations some of which by world class runners almost a century ago agreed on short strides and efficient mechanics. For those more familiar with minimalist advantages this may not be new but it is interesting reading that is not governed by absolutes. For example, there are constant references to 180 strides per minute but the authors quote Jack Daniels as saying that 180 is an ideal average but recognizing everyone is different, it could be more or less. Interesting that last year an article on a 2:30 something female marathoner who was coached to drop from her 200 plus strides to 180 and she became injured. Returning to 200 plus, she's health again. I enjoyed the book but gave it 4 stars since it took awhile to get to the meat of the book. Interesting that Meb only recently converted from heel to mid foot this year winning Boston this year but previously was the 2004 silver medalist and finished 4th in the 2012 Olympics as a heel striker.

This is a great book for anyone who is serious about being a runner over the long term. It is well researched and well written. More important, it cuts through the hype of many shoe manufacturers and blog authors to find those elements of truth. If you are looking for a definitive answer that says"buy these shoes" or "run this way," then keep looking. What you will understand is that even though man ran distance for millions of years, our current environment of shoes and cities has had an effect on how our bodies have developed. Sure, the genetic code is still there and all of the biomechanics are still present, they have not gotten the right development and use. You can still get there and this book gives many insights into how you can find the ancient runner inside you. It also gives you the confidence to experiment and understand what your body is saying and how to listen. For me, it has articulated what I was beginning to think and given me many new paths to read and understand more. Running for fun and pleasure is the payback.

You'll discover Schumpeter's trumpet, not by name, but in the way, that a good and vigilant shepherd becomes "a perennial gale of creative destruction" to predators and problems, while sharing innovative recipes for prevention. He will involve you with the empathy that shepherds have for sheep.In Pastorates today, I've seen the rancher mentality and the shepherd mindset toward "the Sheep of His Pasture." Regrettably, both need the understanding conveyed by this book. Then hopefully both will find their proper place becoming more effective. After reading this short volume, you will approach your ministry differently or should, but either way, you'll have received the virtual experience of what King David, the shepherd knew.

We are using this book for a ladies bible study and it is amazing. It brings such deep insight into the Great Shepherd! Each insight is so important for us "city-dwellers" to understand. There is no way for us to understand the diligent care of a shepherd unless we hear it from an actual shepherd. Keller is truly a caring and gifted shepherd, while also being one of the flock who loves our dear Lord. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to know God better, deeper, and truer.

This is written by a real shepherd. I learned so much about why God compares our relationship to that of a shepherd and his sheep. There are so many aspects of sheep that we don't know about unless we live with them. All the things he talks about describes our behavior towards God, and God's love and protection towards us.One small example is the fact that sheep are completely defenseless. They literally have no means of defending themselves, except running. Therefore, they are completely dependent on the shepherd, and when he is not around, they feel nervous and cannot grow healthily.It is an easy and engrossing read. Highly recommend.

Wow! Great book! Very insightful and thought provoking book examining the similarities between Jesus, our Good Shepherd, and we the sheep of His pasture. I learned a lot about sheep and had to chuckle at some of the funnier parallels between sheep and believers. Also cringed a bit over some of the not-so-flattering similarities! This my 4th purchase of this book, as I've the other 3 away!

This is the best book. If you are looking for a Bible study for Psalm 23, look no further. This is awesome. Phillip Keller was a real shepherd, and he thoroughly explains some of the things about sheep that explains the 23rd Psalm in so much more depth. Being that I'm not a shepherd, I didn't totally understand some of the reasoning behind the 23rd Psalm. But after reading some of the explanations of sheep and the things that they do, it brings newer meaning and insight to the 23rd Psalm. This is an older version of the book. The newer versions that are on sale now are only excerpts from the book. This is the actual book itself. Wish he would re-publish this one in its entirety so that more people could study this. This was definitely worth finding a used copy of to study. I have enjoyed it so very much.

As an experienced shepherd, the author transports us into the role and mind of a loving shepherd to understand why David chose the words he did and how they relate to his sheep and how they parallel the love of our Great Shepherd, Jesus. I cannot say enough about this book, but if you want an in-depth understanding of Psalm 23, I guarantee the insight from a shepherd's perspective in this book will never leave you, or forsake you.

The perspective of Psalm 23 is brought forward so beautifully through the eyes of the author who was a former sheep farmer. Never before have I had such a detailed understanding of what God is saying to His people and there is really no way to fully grasp the meaning of this Scripture unless you know what is entailed taking care of sheep as their shepherd. The author has assigned a chapter to each verse and gives a very insightful lesson of his perspective as the role of a shepherd.This book has changed my life and my understanding concerning the role of the pastor and his congregation. I read to a group of residents at a local nursing home each weekday and recently took a train trip across country and a couple of the residents took care of the reading to the group while I was away. A visitor shared this book with the group, which they were well into when I returned. We read through the book twice, my husband read through it twice, and we bought four new books to share with others. I'm so glad to have found this beautiful little book.Do yourself a favor and buy a new hardcover. The mass production paperback is very small print and harder to read. Enjoy!

The fun of this book is to read how some songs came about, and what ordinary life experiences prompted them; and then see the spiritual side of those same songs. He has always had a great sense of humor, and here we get a glimpse of some of the dynamics among the group members. The small book arrived after having been on order for about 3 weeks. The packaging for the book was appropriate. Having been a near lifelong fan of all work done by the Moody Blues, this small book of Mr. Edge's written work was another fine addition to my personal compilation of their musical and written material. It's really great to see the excellent written work of Mr. Edge that only serves to expand upon the superb drumming and percussion work (and some keyboard work on certain songs) that he has done over the years. Thanks again Amazon for providing me with another truly quality product.

Good memoir on the origins and ideas behind the contributions Graeme Edge made to the Moody Blues

thought provoking lyrics and a great story teller. I've always loved the Moody Blues and Graeme Edge is a huge part of that.

A wonderful small book. I enjoyed reading it very much.

As a man who writes poetry, I was happy to have this book, which contains some of my favorite words in music.

Edge's forte has always been words. This book runs the lyrics of his songs and poems both for the Moody Blues and his own Graeme Edge Band. There is also commentary on some of the songs. I did not give it five stars because there is not commentary on all of them. For those, it's just a lyric sheet. His poetry is beautiful, sometimes cosmic. He is best in his down-to-earth songs such as "I'll Be Level with You," a song to his son from 1971's "Every Good Boy Deserves Favor", or "Going Nowhere," a song about the break-up of a relationship of a middle-aged couple (sung wonderfully by Ray Thomas on the Moodies' "The Present" album from 1983) . Edge comes across as a nice guy who I would probably like a lot if I ever got to meet him. He has a self-deprecating sense of humor. When I saw the Moodies in Concord, Cal., in 1999, he came off the drums to recite his "Nothing Changes" from their then-new album "Strange Times." A few people got up to get beer. He said "Don't leave. I'm not going to sing!" Seeing the lyrics on the page helps appreciate his contirbution to the band better.

I generally love the ROUGH GUIDE. I love it so much that I ordered the new edition of the INDIA guide while I was still using the old one in India. It would be sent to my home, but I assumed I'd want to use it for another trip.Upon reviewing it, I am very disappointed. There seems to be very little research since the last edition. In a few places where new hotels have opened and are featured prominently on TripAdvisor with great ratings, there is no change in the listing (including descriptions) of the hotels from the earlier edition. In one situation (Naggar) where I followed the old edition's hotel recommendation and quickly was disappointed (and left), I heard from *MANY* in the town views about the owner that confirmed my negative impression (pure greed). The negative impressions were unanimous, yet ROUGH GUIDE just repeated the exact same advice as the earlier edition.So it seems pretty clear to me that in many (all?) cases, there was no further research from the earlier edition and not even checking out TripAdvisor to see if some most-recommended places were being overlooked.

I have the printed version of this book and it has been a lot of great info. I was hoping to reduce my packing weight this trip with the Kindle copy instead. So, I bought it and tried it on the Kindle app on my tablet.... thinking full color would be nice compared to my e-ink Kindle. Instead... I returned it for a refund and resorted to the old strategy of cutting out the chapters of the paper guidebook that I need for my trip.First, the formatting of the Kindle book is terrible. It really is set up for a novel, not for a guide book. You loose all the in-context sidebars and interesting facts, for example. The maps are in the Kindle book, but they're super low-resolution images. Click on one to zoom in on it, and you see none of the detail that exists in the paper copy. The index is also missing, making it impossible to find smaller cities or points of interest (you can use the table of contents to find regions or major cities). All in all, a huge failure as a useful travel reference.The written content is great, since it's from the paper copy - it's just impossible to use while traveling. Like I said, I've cut apart my paper copy and have the chapters I need in my backpack instead.

I would have bought this book on Kindle, if it had been available. Unfortunately, it's not. The paperback edition has very thin pages, small print, and a faint typeface; if you are at the reading-glasses stage of your life, you will want them, and a strong lamp as well.This book has more information and variety than the Lonely Planet series, which has become more and more formulaic. Is it a good guide? I'll know when I've gone to India, which hopefully will happen in a few months.There's some "political" (i.e. left-wing) nattering in these pages, but less than in previous Rough Guides, and anyway, it's a travel book. Who cares what this author thought of the Raj? The travel reader wants good maps, thoughtful reviews, and nuts-and-bolts facts. This Rough Guide provides all these. Combine it with the beautiful, full-color Dorling-Kindersley guide, and you have it all.

I'll start off by saying that I wouldn't use the Rough Guide again. We purchased both the overall India guide and the guide to Kerala. In both cases the restaurant suggestions were amazing. Both books directed us to hidden little gems that were delicious and that we would never have found otherwise.That being said, on a few occasions the guide listed activities that flat out didn't exist. In Kochi (Kerala) it described a new mall and how amazing it was, listing it as a place that foreigners should go see. Problem was, the mall hadn't opened yet and won't be for another six months (as of December 2012). So, the writers of the book never visited the place and pretended they did. In my opinion doing this even once is completely unacceptable for a travel guide and immediately removes them from consideration.Another mark against them is that several of their city maps were completely inaccurate and served only to confuse us. When a city map doesn't show a roundabout you're instantly lost. I do blame them for one fight with my wife because I insisted we were following the map correctly (we were, the map was just wrong). They should have at least said "map not to scale or not for actual directions."Overall, if I was to travel again I might buy the Rough Guide as a supplement to other guide books but I would never rely solely on it again.

I think I prefer lonely planet, but rg contained just enough useful info that I'd buy it again. Be ready to chop it just the sections you need, though! It's too heavy to take the entire book.

After reading Russell & Norvig's amazing tome, this is a great high level refresher of the concepts covered there.For an aspiring software engineer interested in developing algorithms that simulate the steps of a thought process, this book helps one understand:A) what is currently possible, what is not possible & what is nearly possible :) ;B) what approaches have hit dead ends & what alternative approaches superseded them;C) what subcategories of AI research exist, & how they can be integratedD) what areas of AI research are being actively investigated today and show promise of further advances.E) how we stand upon the shoulders of giants [some amazing programmatic investigations took place before most script kiddies and raving transhumanists were even conceived].In a way this last point is slightly melancholic - since the failure of the Japanese 5th Generation Computer Systems project (FGCS) in the 1980s, programming largely consists of re-inventing information systems ad nauseum. And yet cognitive science hints that the human brain is Turing Equivalent - unfortunately, the demand for immediate ROI stymies the effort to automate more tasks. This book is a potent reminder that programmers should strive to understand how to code outside this box.A recommended read.

There is a great deal of good material here. I wonder if the general problem of producing a history of AI would not have been better decomposed into a set of mini-histories each concerned with a particular topic and occupying a single chapter. For example, NLP, machine vision, robotics, knowledge representation, vagaries of public/private financing, major commercial deployments, etc. each could have been addressed in a single chapter. In this book, individual topics pop up again and again in interleaved fashion as the author's single timeline unfolds. This may be a bit disconcerting for readers not already well versed in the field. Other advantages of a modular approach to the history of AI rather than a simple sequential approach are ease of updating the text for future editions and the ability of subject matter experts to quickly find and provide constructive feedback in their areas of expertise.A minor irritation was the use of URLs in body text rather than confining them to end notes. Most authors would like their books to be timeless; the use of highly fragile URLs in body text seems to contradict this goal.I suspect that this is the best history of AI we have so far. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the field.

It is wise for practitioners in a field to know its history. Nils Nilsson wrote the first textbook on AI (artificial intelligence) I ever read, more than 40 years ago. "The Quest for Artificial Intelligence" is as comprehensive and readable a history of AI as I have encountered, covering the fields it developed out of through the collection of fields it has become today.Nilsson is a part of that history, having made contributions to heuristic search, planning, and other areas of AI. He gives his own work fair coverage in the panorama of issues, problems, and large scale questions that have shaped AI since its inception."The Quest for Artificial Intelligence" compares favorably with Margaret Boden's massive, two volume history of cognitive science (AI being one of the cognitive sciences) "Mind As Machine." Nilsson's book is the one to read if you want a detailed understanding of what artificial intelligence is and has been, with enough technical detail to satisfy a student of AI while remaining readable and interesting to the educated layman.If you have an AI library of six or more books, this should be one of them.

Unless we make contact with aliens from another galaxy or figure out how to power electrical grids with dark energy, I think by 2050 we'll look back on the first half of the century and realize that AI was humanity's most significant technological advancement.Nilsson's book is a thorough survey of many facets of AI with an engaging blend of human stories and technical detail that will satisfy most readers, with hundreds of references that will keep more curious readers busy for years.

A must have, A must read for anyone that really wants to understand the origins and current state, and current promise of Artificial Intelligence. As usual Nils does a good job here.
