From the Inside Flap

Starting kindergarten represents a major milestone in the lives of young children (and their parents!). It is an important step into the unknown that while exciting can also be the cause of nervous anticipation for everyone involved. The good news is that it doesn't have to be scary! Today's technology-driven world is complex and changing rapidly. As it does, the expectations of what our children need to know when they enter kindergarten have changed as well. There is growing anxiety around how to define and instill a new and improved set of school-readiness skills that will best help them to succeed. In this fun, creative story from bestselling authors Julia Cook and Laura A. Jana, parents and educators can more clearly understand the important connection that exists between everyday behaviors and the foundational development of valuable, 21st century life-skills during early childhood. This book also includes creative, practical tips to implement these skills in the home and classroom. Follow Roo as he figures out how to use and apply his amazing "QI" (pronounced key) skills: ME, WE, WHY, WILL, WIGGLE, WOBBLE, and WHAT IF. I love to move around and explore, so my favorite skill is WIGGLE. I can jump into things, and reach for the stars. And bend and stretch and jiggle! With his backpack of "super cool" skills and a head full of questions, Roo is excited to jump into kindergarten, and your children will be too!

This may be a good book for parents to read to their child. Parents would have time to explain the concepts in the book in greater detail. As a teacher hoping to read it to my students, I don't like it. The book assumes children have gone to preschool when many children haven't. It starts by talking about how kids can feel good because they already know how to button, zip, and rhyme. Traditionally, about half of my students can't do these things as they enter school. Explaining the many skills that the author writes about, and giving further examples so that the children understand, would take a lot of time. Kindergarten students simply don't have the attention span or background knowledge that this book is expecting.

I bought this for my daughter's 5th birthday as she will be going into Kindergarten next school year. She loves it!

Great book to prepare your kid to kindergarten

Cute book for my niece that just started kindergarten

My 5 year old grandson liked it.

Great book ..made a very happy recipient..⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Review

"There are few spiritual teachers who give us genuinely fresh insight, but even fewer who give us the tools so we can come to those insights for ourselves. Cynthia Bourgeault does both, and does them very well!"—Richard Rohr, OFM, author of  Everything Belongs: The Gift of Contemplative Prayer "A masterful work. Cynthia Bourgeault invites us to follow Jesus's path of self-emptying love, and she describes wisdom practices that we Christians can use every day to transform our own minds so that we too can see with the eyes of Christ."—Jim Marion, author of Putting on the Mind of Christ  "Bourgeault centers her expansive house of wisdom in the sayings and extraordinary death of the gospel Jesus as she turns light and darkness into a living poetry of self-emptying vision."—Willis Barnstone, author of  The Other Bible, coauthor of The Gnostic Bible

I am not religious. I am not academic and this is certainly not a book I would have searched out or read on my own were it not brought directly to me by unexplained events. My husband and I were actually attending a meditation retreat when I randomly picked this book up in their library while waiting for dinner one evening. It was hidden among my more familiar authors of Marianne WIlliamson and Eckart Tolle. I am not sure WHY I picked it up other than it being Divinely led TO me. I am confident ANY other time that I'd scan the back of the book to have read Cynthia Bourgeault was a Episcopal priest I would have immediately placed it back on the shelf. (organized religion is not my cup of tea) I know for sure any other time I'd have flipped through the book to see the highly intelligent "academic" type writing style, I also would have put it down...but something made me carry this book over to the nearest chair to start reading...and I couldn't put it down. Clear, deep and profound insights into new ways of inviting thought provoking new ways of looking at Jesus and the messages he's left for us. It's been a new "wow" for me and opened up a whole new world of thought. This book, and the wisdom of Cynthia's teachings, have been like hiring my own personal coach & spiritual leader, urging me on to walk the walk of Godliness as Jesus really taught. I have since been into several of her books and have loved them all.

"Wisdom Jesus" is a three-part book. In Part I, Cynthia Bourgeault presents Jesus as a radical teacher, and not as a savior or as the Messiah. According to her, Jesus was nothing like how he is presented by the traditional church. He was an enlightened person whose only purpose was to reprogram or upgrade human consciousness from the innate dualistic "operating system" to a non-dualistic one. That Jesus was much more like a Zen master than a Jewish rabbi or priest. Bourgeault's analysis resonated completely with my own conclusions about Christianity, namely that traditional or orthodox beliefs are really much more about the person of Jesus and who he was rather than his message. In its current form, Christian teachings ares based more on those of Saul of Tarsus than those of Jesus of Nazareth – traditional Christianity should really be called Paulism in my opinion. The church hierarchy is modeled after the imperial Roman government, where it became its enforcement arm. In contrast to western/Roman style version, introduced some of the so-called heretical texts, such as The Gospel of Thomas and The Gospel of Mary Magdalene to illustrate the fact that some early Christians believed in a very different Jesus and a very different message compared to what is currently taught in Sunday schools. So far so good. I really enjoyed Part I.Then came Part II. Here the author revealed herself as an Episcopalian priest and a professional director of medieval passion plays, contradicting virtually everything she said in Part I. In Part II, she took us back to Sunday school all over again, quoting chapter and verse from Matthew, Mark, Luke and John about Jesus's life, his ministry, his crucifixion, burial, resurrection and bodily ascension into Heaven. In these accounts, she takes everything stated in the four Gospels as literally true and historically accurate. She also presents us with her own non-biblical account of Jesus' descent into Hell, which occurred prior to his resurrection, and how the components of the trinity fit together and complement each other.Part III delves into Christian meditation techniques, which aren't as much about quieting the mind as much as expressing the intent to upgrade the mind to a non-dualistic operating system. This upgrade is accomplished primarily by "letting go" with Jesus as the facilitator.I must say that I was very disappointed in this book. It started off very well, but inexplicably devolved into orthodox Christian dogma, which cannot be be validated by evidence or reason, but must simply be believed as it was written in the Bible. The author does not explain why the writings in the Nag Hammadi scrolls were not included in the Bible if they were in fact closer to revealing the true message of Jesus than the four Gospels. Nothing in Parts II or III resembles any of the teachings of Nag Hammadi or the other Gnostic texts.I didn't find the Christian Wisdom Practices in Part III of the book to be much different than yoga, transcendental meditation, or Buddhist mediation. The Centering Prayer seems a bit like the mantra technique, except that it includes an "intent" to become one with God. Some meditation experts say that stating such an intent takes you in the opposite direction because it implies there is still a gulf that needs to be crossed to get there, whereas as Jesus stated, the Kingdom of Heaven is already at hand.Bourgeault suggests performing the Lactio Divina (sacred reading) method, which involves reading scripture "between the lines." This may be a good starting point for seekers, but it won't take them very far. For one thing, the scriptures have been edited and mistranslated into various languages, plus the meanings of words change over the years, so it's very easy to be misled by the words. One example of this is this famous quote, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven." This metaphor doesn't really make sense, but some "experts" insist that Jesus was talking about a small gateway into Jerusalem called the "eye of the needle" which a camel could barely pass through. Actually, the saying probably stems from an obvious typographical error: "gamlo" in Aramaic, which means rope, was transcribed as "gamla" meaning camel. Interestingly, the Greek word for rope is also very similar to the Greek word for camel (kamilos vs kamilon) and this verse eventually came down to us from Greek through Latin (where camel = cameli and rope = funem). It would have made a lot more sense to compare something very difficult to a rope passing through the eye of a needle instead of a camel, but biblical scholars refuse to make the correction of "camel" to "rope" because they would be admitting the Bible contains errors. Ruminating scripture filled with errors and improperly translated into modern languages isn't the best way to get to the truth. The "wisdom practice" of chanting and psalmody described in Part III is similar to Buddhist and Hare Krishna chanting. The wisdom practice the author refers to as "welcoming" recapitulates "letting go" she discussed earlier in the book, and Part III finishes off with the practice of celebrating the Eucharist, a full-on Christian ritual that never really made any sense to me. There was nothing new to report in Part III.I gave Part I four stars and only one star each for Parts II and III, which averages out to two stars overall.

With modern historical research, much of the Bible is found to be altered or written specifically to make certain items work the way canon is desired. (See historical research of Bible elsewhere.) Here, the author is proposing that Jesus did NOT want a separate religion from Judaism, but rather wanted others to enter the "Kingdom of Heaven" while in this world. Reading His statements in this light does put His words into a different context. The author uses her interpretation to give new meaning to the "Kingdom of Heaven" and how to access it in this world. This book would be heretical to those who believe that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, yet it makes sense of much of Jesus' words related to the "Kingdom." If you hold to the Pauline interpretation of Gospel [that the only way to heaven is through the cross, and risen Christ], then you will NOT be happy with this book. HOWEVER, if you are looking for a way to make your life more meaningful, then this book may be what you are looking for. Her thesis is that Jesus was calling for a direct experience of union with GOD, and not a belief system. She uses the later chapters to assist one in achieving this union. I found it to be very insightful and useful for me.

I had very high hopes. Much of the book was an intelligent conversation about what Jesus' words were truly saying and focused on the teachings that caused so many to be enthralled with his message. Unfortunately, I often feel that many authors that approach this topic fall back into line with traditional church teaching in what seems to be an effort to not upset too many people. Also, I find that, as in this book, there is an attempt to take eastern meditation practices and retrofit Christian approaches on top. It seems contrived. Overall good but could have been great.

Neil Gaiman is the Grimm brothers for the 21st century. And this, lady's and gentlemen, is his fairey tale. It is whimsical. It is crisp; it never drags. It follows the adage of "why use 20 words with 2 will do?" It is has moments of dry humor, yet never forgets that this is at heart a serious quest, one for love itself. Indeed, its plot is simple at its core. Yet despite that, the story itself is twisty and full of adventure. The setting, as most of Gaiman's settings are, has no comparison. The characters are enjoyable. They are not overly complex in and of themselves, but they are extremely varied and certainly have some growth. Gaiman always writes each character like a different individual, and does it well. None of them are an extension of himself. As for the artwork, it is ... difficult to describe as to it' style. Frankly, I personally don't think I have a good comparison. Here what I will say: it doesn't get in the way of the tale. It subtly adds something to the story without becoming the story itself. I find myself glancing at it and smiling as I read, rather than gaping at it in awe as I struggle to focus on the words. It is the backup keyboard to the lead guitar, if you will. And like every good backup, there are several sections of full page imagery to show of Vess' talent without distraction.Overall, I recommend this book wholeheartedly. In a sentence: This is the adventure you tried to have as a kid; most of our imaginations simply aren't this powerful. I take no shame in embracing my failure and enjoying instead the wonders of the imaginations of these two artists, who are clearly masters of their craft.

If you like Neil Gaiman, you will like Stardust, which I would describe as a fun adult fairy tale. It's not as dark as his other work (though still definitely written for an adult audience), and is a relatively fast read. I bought this edition specifically because I had heard that Charles Vess' illustrations were impressive. I'm glad that I did. I'm not a fan of graphic novels, but that's not what this is. Instead, the illustrations are interspersed through the text and add color to the plot without directing it - essentially, the two aspects work together in a way that is really unique in adult fiction. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone who could use a little mental vacation from the real world.

I listened to the audio-book version of this and loved it. I watched the movie version of this and became confused. And then, at the end of the audio-book there is an interview with the author, and in it he explained that there were indeed many versions of the book, starting with a graphic-novel. It's really fascinating how the concept and story line evolved and how the story grew. How he found mistakes, (the obsidian blade), and how he anticipates changing the story as time passes. Buy this, but also listen to the audio book and interview.

This book was so enjoyable to read. It took me far away from reality and into a place I haven't gone since I was a child, and I'm so glad I took the journey. I didn't want the story to end by the time I finished the novel. The illustrations were lovely and well worth the extra cost. The only complaint I can give is that since I read along with an audiobook, the text in the book was different than the audiobook sometimes. I thought the audiobook's version of narration was often times better, but that's ok; They were small discrepancies.

Love this edition of this book. Neil Gaiman is a visionary, and the illustrations in this edition are so pretty, making the story one that my niece is eager to listen to when I read.

If you want Vess's amazing illustrations, which were an integral part of the original graphic novel release, make sure the title is fully "Stardust: Being A Romance Within the Realms of Faerie" before you click Add to Cart! I ordered Stardust by mistake at first, then figured out that the right one was Stardust: Being A Romance Within the Realms of Faerie - if you get that one you will not be disappointed! Or, you could always get the original graphic novel in 4 parts: Stardust 1,2,3,4 of 4 (Being a Romance Within the Realms of Faerie, Volumes 1,2,3,4) (that's all 4, you can also find them individually).

Don't think for a second this is boring or sappy. The last twenty pages come at you more powerful than the first two hundred. But they won't make any sense until you read the first two hundred and believe me, it's worth it with the illustrated edition. This is a story you can feel, touch, and smell. Don't worry about being confused by Gaiman's British prose. It's poetic and understandable. With that said, the story itself may not be categorized. What do you call a story that combines horror, action, romance, adventure, personal mental struggle, and mystery? An new-fashioned epic. Or as Mr. Gaiman said, "...a fairy tale for adults."

When I first heard of Stardust as a novel, it was many years after I had seen the film adaptation. I loved the film and very dearly wanted to read the book not to intentionally compare; but to see what the original story was.Stardust is a fairy-tale of a different kind. Darker, grislier, more adult. But it doesn't suffer for those reasons, it excels because of them. This novel, and indeed the fantastic and gorgeous artwork, kept me enthralled for hours and I finished it in one day (not because the book was easy to read, but because I couldn't stop reading it!).Stardust is an adult fairy-tale, the themes are powerful and enthralling and I enjoyed every star dotted page of it.

John Williamson Nevin: High-Church Calvinist (American Reformed Biographies), by D. G. Hart

Review

"John Williamson Nevin (1803-1886) called the Protestant churches back to an older piety, believing that through word and sacrament the church itself is an agency of grace. Hart devotes much of this book to the intellectual context of Nevin's thought and seeks to reclaim aspects of his theology for today's church. This book is current in its scholarship, engaging in its lines of thought, and provocative in its conclusions." --Robert Benedetto, Princeton Theological Seminary"Eschewing conventional interpretations of John W. Nevin as a 'liberalizing' figure, D. G. Hart's fresh reading carefully places Nevin in the context of 19th-century American struggles to define the church. Many today are troubled by the excessive subjectivity and individualism of pietistic evangelicalism. This important book will assure them that they are not alone, and that there are rich and authentically Reformed alternatives waiting to be explored." --William B. Evans, Younts Professor of Bible and Religion, Erskine College"A well-researched and engagingly written theological biography of an often neglected figure. Is especially good in digging out Nevin's important proposals about the church in its American setting that were published in the Mercersburg Review. Whether or not readers come away with Hart's own conclusion that Nevin was largely correct in his prescription for reforming American Protestant practice, they will benefit from following Hart as he carefully lays out the burden of Nevin's concerns." --Mark A. Noll, McManis Professor of Christian Thought, Wheaton College

Hart's real passion is to defend the idea of "church [alone] as mediator of divine grace" (p.34). His determination to view Nevin's life and work through this grid shapes the content and tone of the book so significantly that Nevin's own deviations from that agenda are put down to "naivete" (p.43), poor health (p.73), and so on. The result is a relentlessly tendentious book. In the end, Nevin is more a vehicle for the writer's own thought than a figure worthy of more impartial study in his own right. A better choice would be Theodore Appel's "Life and Work of John Williamson Nevin."

In America, the concept of the "covenant" has degenerated into what the popular mind views as a "contract", a vertical arrangement of preference and convenience. In popular reformed theology, this devolution has reduced the church to little more than a voluntary association, presbyterian style, and worship as a devotional governed by Robert's Rules of Order. For Nevin, covenant cannot be conceived apart from the God who speaks visibly through the sacraments. For Nevin, the Church is nothing less than the historical manifestation of the Body of Christ in direct union and communion with her Risen, Glorified Lord. Worship therefore is not governed by earthly rules of Puritan propriety and procedure but rather "God's Service" where God calls man into His presence and ministers to man through Word and Sacrament, Prayer and Praise."Reformed" ecclesiology without Nevin's view of the covenant is bound to degenerate into sectarianism and, ultimately, become a humanistic enterprise in search of "new methods" to ape the life only the Risen Christ can impart: the catechetical system versus the "Anxious Bench".For his (and Schaff's) efforts, so-called "reformed theologians" have slandered him with the label "Romanist" while themselves embracing positions that would render Calvin unable to be ordained in their presbyteries due to his view of the sacraments which Nevin called the "reformed" church to return to (in his work on the "Mystical Presence").This excellent biography should be read by all those who are aghast at the shallowness of modern "reformed" worship and church life and who seek an alternative. Nevin - through this work - shows the way to a "unified field theory" of reformed ecclesiology. It is for his heirs to follow his lead! Start here!

John Williamson Nevin, a largely forgotten 19th-century American theologian, was a man on a mission. As D.G. Hart makes clear in this apt intellectual biography, Nevin passionately desired to return the Presbyterian and Reformed churches in America to a more ecclessial form of piety--one centered on an understanding of the church as Christ's Body, where His living presence is encountered in Word and Sacrament. The Second Great Awakening and evangelists like Charles Finney had taken American protestantism in a very different direction, where the role of the church was de-emphasized in favor a piety centered on revivalism and individuals' own "anxious bench" conversion experiences. Nevin became the leading theologian at Mercersburg Seminary and its parent denomination, the German Reformed Church (later RCUS). He used this position to try to make the German Reformed Church a kind of test case for his "high-church" views--which, as he demonstrated, were far closer to the convictions of John Calvin and other leading reformers than the religious enthusiasm of Finney on the one hand, or the sub-sacramental intellectualism of men like Charles Hodge on the other. First, he was the principle architect of what has become known as "Mercersburg Theology." Later, toward the end of his career, he tried to apply his views liturgically as the denomination sought to create new worship resources for the now English-speaking church.Despite Nevin's wide influence within his own denomination during his lifetime, he met great opposition that ultimately stifled his thought and contributions. His churchly piety then, as now, was simply unpopular among many American Reformed Christians. This, coupled with the denominational mergers that ultimately caused the German Reformed Church to disappear from the American scene, has left his work unjustly neglected.

During this time period I was a dyed in the wool yellow dog Democrat and Nixon-hater.The con job successfully effected by the Democratic Party and its media allies is fully and relentlessly exposedin this memoir.I was mesmerized by the unfolding narrative of how Nixon vilified as a warmonger by the same Democrats who started and endlessly expanded the commitment of American blood and treasure in Vietnam extricated the countryfrom the morass.I feel retrospectively shamed for my unhesitating acceptance of the Democratic party's U turn on theVietnam issue once out of power.I never thought I would be ashamed of such party stalwarts as Mike Mansfield,Frank Church,Gore etc. This volume is a page turner and will shed much light on subsequent politics in which Republicans are always portrayed as villains whether their names are Reagan,Bush ,or dare I say Trump.

This book, due to length and level of detail, will not be for everyone. But it is a vitally important work for those who want to understand some of the critical foreign policy events in American history. This book deals with Kissinger's tenure as Richard Nixon's National Security Advisor from 1969-1972, and is the first volume of his memoirs. An astounding amount of history is compressed into that time period, including the Nixon opening to China, the intractable problems of the Middle East, with special focus on the triangular diplomacy involving the Soviet Union, Egypt, and the United States, the war in Vietnam, and the exceedingly tortured negotiations to end that war, (with a good look at the Nixon decisions on the excursion into Cambodia, the "Christmas Bombing", and the self described "brutal" treatment of the recalcitrant South Vietnamese as agreement neared), and the Indo-Pakistan war, and the "tilt" towards Pakistan. Any one of those items would be a book in itself, and the fact that Kissinger not only kept all of those balls in the air but manages, through this volume, to show how they were all "connected" is a testament to his brilliance. Dr. Kissinger has many detractors, and Nixon Administration policies, especially with regard to Vietnam, have drawn severe criticism over the years. Kissinger takes those critics on directly, and makes some strong and compelling arguments to justify his policy recommendations. Vietnam was a tragic error for the United States, but Kissinger brings an up close perspective to why many of the important players acted the way they did.Kissinger's devotion to the "realist" school of diplomacy is evident through his actions and policy prescriptions described in this volume. His hard headed and "realistic" approach to bargaining are laid out clearly in his approach to the negotiations with North Vietnam, where he recognized that an unfavorable "balance of forces" on the ground would lead to an unsatisfactory outcome from the perspective of the U.S. His devotion to "equilibrium" govern his negotiations on SALT, and advise his relationship and policy recommendations with the Soviets. For the historian this book is essential. Kissinger dealt with some of the very true giants of this (or any other era), including Chou En-Lai, Indira Ghandi, Le Duc Tho, Leonid Breznhev, Andrei Gromyko, Mao Tse Tung, Moshe Dayan, Anwar Sadat, Golda Meir, and so many others. He seems to me to be exceedingly honest about his relationship with Richard Nixon, who he described as brooding, lonely, and filled with resentment towards so many. He, in my opinion, fairly describes some of the dysfunction of the foreign policy methodology of the first term Nixon Administration, and takes some of the blame onto himself. (The relationship with Secretary of State William Rodgers is a big part of this dysfunction) Kissinger is writing to make sure history records his perspective, but he does so in a way that brings valuable insight to a critical time in U.S. foreign policy, when change and bold steps produced much disruption in this arena. Love them or hate them the Nixon-Kissinger team shook US foreign policy and produced real change that impacts us to this very day. A must read for those who love history or foreign policy.

This is one in a series of books written by Henry Kissinger. The book is quite long, but the information and insights provided make you feel as though you are in the room with Nixon, Mao and Brezhnev. This book covers the white house years from NSA advisor and on through his time as Secretary of State. This is a great read for anyone involved in the Viet Nam war from 1968 - 1973.

I choose five stars because, as any other Kissinger book, this one is also a history lesson. His capacity to evaluate any situation is excelent. I also like the mixed analisys that he does telling us why that particular decision was taken at that given time, making a study of the facts as we know, the facts that the people on that time knew, and the personality of the authorities that took the decision. The writing is perfect and the vocabulary is very rich.

Read and learn!

I started this book on a whim in a coffee shop and soon decided to read all 1,475 pages (which required buying the book!) Kissinger has an amazing story to tell and writes exceptionally well. He gives vivid descriptions of encounters with world leaders and of Washington politics. His reflections range over history, politics, culture in many countries, war, and US policy. He is full of surprises, sharp-edged, hilarious, philosophical, and always authoritative. Professor Kissinger doesn't use fancy words. He is never aloof. His purpose is to make the material understandable. Some passages about negotiations have perhaps more detail than one really wants. The last four years of the Viet Nam war figure prominently in the book. Nixon and Kissinger's insistence on winding down the war slowly over four years is controversial. The whole book is unsentimental, convincing and will appeal to the liberal or conservative reader. It is also a revealing study of the "Cold War", including Nixon's trip to China, the Middle East, the SALT treaty, European relations, war between India and Pakistan, and more.

Great read. Very informative and interesting.

You must be patient to read through such a detailed and complete account of the facts, but you'll learn a lot, and will be amazed with one of the greatest analytical minds ever.
