Neil Gaiman is the Grimm brothers for the 21st century. And this, lady's and gentlemen, is his fairey tale. It is whimsical. It is crisp; it never drags. It follows the adage of "why use 20 words with 2 will do?" It is has moments of dry humor, yet never forgets that this is at heart a serious quest, one for love itself. Indeed, its plot is simple at its core. Yet despite that, the story itself is twisty and full of adventure. The setting, as most of Gaiman's settings are, has no comparison. The characters are enjoyable. They are not overly complex in and of themselves, but they are extremely varied and certainly have some growth. Gaiman always writes each character like a different individual, and does it well. None of them are an extension of himself.As for the artwork, it is ... difficult to describe as to it' style. Frankly, I personally don't think I have a good comparison. Here what I will say: it doesn't get in the way of the tale. It subtly adds something to the story without becoming the story itself. I find myself glancing at it and smiling as I read, rather than gaping at it in awe as I struggle to focus on the words. It is the backup keyboard to the lead guitar, if you will. And like every good backup, there are several sections of full page imagery to show of Vess' talent without distraction.Overall, I recommend this book wholeheartedly. In a sentence: This is the adventure you tried to have as a kid; most of our imaginations simply aren't this powerful. I take no shame in embracing my failure and enjoying instead the wonders of the imaginations of these two artists, who are clearly masters of their craft.

If you like Neil Gaiman, you will like Stardust, which I would describe as a fun adult fairy tale. It's not as dark as his other work (though still definitely written for an adult audience), and is a relatively fast read. I bought this edition specifically because I had heard that Charles Vess' illustrations were impressive. I'm glad that I did. I'm not a fan of graphic novels, but that's not what this is. Instead, the illustrations are interspersed through the text and add color to the plot without directing it - essentially, the two aspects work together in a way that is really unique in adult fiction. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone who could use a little mental vacation from the real world.

I listened to the audio-book version of this and loved it. I watched the movie version of this and became confused. And then, at the end of the audio-book there is an interview with the author, and in it he explained that there were indeed many versions of the book, starting with a graphic-novel. It's really fascinating how the concept and story line evolved and how the story grew. How he found mistakes, (the obsidian blade), and how he anticipates changing the story as time passes. Buy this, but also listen to the audio book and interview.

This book was so enjoyable to read. It took me far away from reality and into a place I haven't gone since I was a child, and I'm so glad I took the journey. I didn't want the story to end by the time I finished the novel. The illustrations were lovely and well worth the extra cost. The only complaint I can give is that since I read along with an audiobook, the text in the book was different than the audiobook sometimes. I thought the audiobook's version of narration was often times better, but that's ok; They were small discrepancies.

Love this edition of this book. Neil Gaiman is a visionary, and the illustrations in this edition are so pretty, making the story one that my niece is eager to listen to when I read.

If you want Vess's amazing illustrations, which were an integral part of the original graphic novel release, make sure the title is fully "Stardust: Being A Romance Within the Realms of Faerie" before you click Add to Cart! I ordered Stardust by mistake at first, then figured out that the right one was Stardust: Being A Romance Within the Realms of Faerie - if you get that one you will not be disappointed! Or, you could always get the original graphic novel in 4 parts: Stardust 1,2,3,4 of 4 (Being a Romance Within the Realms of Faerie, Volumes 1,2,3,4) (that's all 4, you can also find them individually).

Don't think for a second this is boring or sappy. The last twenty pages come at you more powerful than the first two hundred. But they won't make any sense until you read the first two hundred and believe me, it's worth it with the illustrated edition.This is a story you can feel, touch, and smell. Don't worry about being confused by Gaiman's British prose. It's poetic and understandable. With that said, the story itself may not be categorized. What do you call a story that combines horror, action, romance, adventure, personal mental struggle, and mystery?An new-fashioned epic. Or as Mr. Gaiman said, "...a fairy tale for adults."

When I first heard of Stardust as a novel, it was many years after I had seen the film adaptation. I loved the film and very dearly wanted to read the book not to intentionally compare; but to see what the original story was.Stardust is a fairy-tale of a different kind. Darker, grislier, more adult. But it doesn't suffer for those reasons, it excels because of them.This novel, and indeed the fantastic and gorgeous artwork, kept me enthralled for hours and I finished it in one day (not because the book was easy to read, but because I couldn't stop reading it!).Stardust is an adult fairy-tale, the themes are powerful and enthralling and I enjoyed every star dotted page of it.

Hart's real passion is to defend the idea of "church [alone] as mediator of divine grace" (p.34). His determination to view Nevin's life and work through this grid shapes the content and tone of the book so significantly that Nevin's own deviations from that agenda are put down to "naivete" (p.43), poor health (p.73), and so on. The result is a relentlessly tendentious book. In the end, Nevin is more a vehicle for the writer's own thought than a figure worthy of more impartial study in his own right. A better choice would be Theodore Appel's "Life and Work of John Williamson Nevin."

In America, the concept of the "covenant" has degenerated into what the popular mind views as a "contract", a vertical arrangement of preference and convenience.In popular reformed theology, this devolution has reduced the church to little more than a voluntary association, presbyterian style, and worship as a devotional governed by Robert's Rules of Order.For Nevin, covenant cannot be conceived apart from the God who speaks visibly through the sacraments. For Nevin,the Church is nothing less than the historical manifestation of the Body of Christ in direct union and communion with her Risen, Glorified Lord. Worship therefore is not governed by earthly rules of Puritan propriety and procedure but rather "God's Service" where God calls man into His presence and ministers to man through Word and Sacrament, Prayer and Praise."Reformed" ecclesiology without Nevin's view of the covenant is bound to degenerate into sectarianism and, ultimately, become a humanistic enterprise in search of "new methods" to ape the life only the Risen Christ can impart: the catechetical system versus the "Anxious Bench".For his (and Schaff's) efforts, so-called "reformed theologians" have slandered him with the label "Romanist" while themselves embracing positions that would render Calvin unable to be ordained in their presbyteries due to his view of the sacraments which Nevin called the "reformed" church to return to (in his work on the "Mystical Presence").This excellent biography should be read by all those who are aghast at the shallowness of modern "reformed" worship and church life and who seek an alternative. Nevin - through this work - shows the way to a "unified field theory" of reformed ecclesiology.It is for his heirs to follow his lead! Start here!

John Williamson Nevin, a largely forgotten 19th-century American theologian, was a man on a mission. As D.G. Hart makes clear in this apt intellectual biography, Nevin passionately desired to return the Presbyterian and Reformed churches in America to a more ecclessial form of piety--one centered on an understanding of the church as Christ's Body, where His living presence is encountered in Word and Sacrament.The Second Great Awakening and evangelists like Charles Finney had taken American protestantism in a very different direction, where the role of the church was de-emphasized in favor a piety centered on revivalism and individuals' own "anxious bench" conversion experiences. Nevin became the leading theologian at Mercersburg Seminary and its parent denomination, the German Reformed Church (later RCUS). He used this position to try to make the German Reformed Church a kind of test case for his "high-church" views--which, as he demonstrated, were far closer to the convictions of John Calvin and other leading reformers than the religious enthusiasm of Finney on the one hand, or the sub-sacramental intellectualism of men like Charles Hodge on the other. First, he was the principle architect of what has become known as "Mercersburg Theology." Later, toward the end of his career, he tried to apply his views liturgically as the denomination sought to create new worship resources for the now English-speaking church.Despite Nevin's wide influence within his own denomination during his lifetime, he met great opposition that ultimately stifled his thought and contributions. His churchly piety then, as now, was simply unpopular among many American Reformed Christians. This, coupled with the denominational mergers that ultimately caused the German Reformed Church to disappear from the American scene, has left his work unjustly neglected.

During this time period I was a dyed in the wool yellow dog Democrat and Nixon-hater.The con job successfully effected by the Democratic Party and its media allies is fully and relentlessly exposedin this memoir.I was mesmerized by the unfolding narrative of how Nixon vilified as a warmonger by the same Democrats who started and endlessly expanded the commitment of American blood and treasure in Vietnam extricated the countryfrom the morass.I feel retrospectively shamed for my unhesitating acceptance of the Democratic party's U turn on theVietnam issue once out of power.I never thought I would be ashamed of such party stalwarts as Mike Mansfield,Frank Church,Gore etc.This volume is a page turner and will shed much light on subsequent politics in which Republicans are always portrayed as villains whether their names are Reagan,Bush ,or dare I say Trump.

This book, due to length and level of detail, will not be for everyone. But it is a vitally important work for those who want to understand some of the critical foreign policy events in American history. This book deals with Kissinger's tenure as Richard Nixon's National Security Advisor from 1969-1972, and is the first volume of his memoirs. An astounding amount of history is compressed into that time period, including the Nixon opening to China, the intractable problems of the Middle East, with special focus on the triangular diplomacy involving the Soviet Union, Egypt, and the United States, the war in Vietnam, and the exceedingly tortured negotiations to end that war, (with a good look at the Nixon decisions on the excursion into Cambodia, the "Christmas Bombing", and the self described "brutal" treatment of the recalcitrant South Vietnamese as agreement neared), and the Indo-Pakistan war, and the "tilt" towards Pakistan. Any one of those items would be a book in itself, and the fact that Kissinger not only kept all of those balls in the air but manages, through this volume, to show how they were all "connected" is a testament to his brilliance. Dr. Kissinger has many detractors, and Nixon Administration policies, especially with regard to Vietnam, have drawn severe criticism over the years. Kissinger takes those critics on directly, and makes some strong and compelling arguments to justify his policy recommendations. Vietnam was a tragic error for the United States, but Kissinger brings an up close perspective to why many of the important players acted the way they did.Kissinger's devotion to the "realist" school of diplomacy is evident through his actions and policy prescriptions described in this volume. His hard headed and "realistic" approach to bargaining are laid out clearly in his approach to the negotiations with North Vietnam, where he recognized that an unfavorable "balance of forces" on the ground would lead to an unsatisfactory outcome from the perspective of the U.S. His devotion to "equilibrium" govern his negotiations on SALT, and advise his relationship and policy recommendations with the Soviets.For the historian this book is essential. Kissinger dealt with some of the very true giants of this (or any other era), including Chou En-Lai, Indira Ghandi, Le Duc Tho, Leonid Breznhev, Andrei Gromyko, Mao Tse Tung, Moshe Dayan, Anwar Sadat, Golda Meir, and so many others. He seems to me to be exceedingly honest about his relationship with Richard Nixon, who he described as brooding, lonely, and filled with resentment towards so many. He, in my opinion, fairly describes some of the dysfunction of the foreign policy methodology of the first term Nixon Administration, and takes some of the blame onto himself. (The relationship with Secretary of State William Rodgers is a big part of this dysfunction) Kissinger is writing to make sure history records his perspective, but he does so in a way that brings valuable insight to a critical time in U.S. foreign policy, when change and bold steps produced much disruption in this arena. Love them or hate them the Nixon-Kissinger team shook US foreign policy and produced real change that impacts us to this very day. A must read for those who love history or foreign policy.

This is one in a series of books written by Henry Kissinger. The book is quite long, but the information and insights provided make you feel as though you are in the room with Nixon, Mao and Brezhnev. This book covers the white house years from NSA advisor and on through his time as Secretary of State. This is a great read for anyone involved in the Viet Nam war from 1968 - 1973.

I choose five stars because, as any other Kissinger book, this one is also a history lesson. His capacity to evaluate any situation is excelent. I also like the mixed analisys that he does telling us why that particular decision was taken at that given time, making a study of the facts as we know, the facts that the people on that time knew, and the personality of the authorities that took the decision.The writing is perfect and the vocabulary is very rich.

I started this book on a whim in a coffee shop and soon decided to read all 1,475 pages (which required buying the book!) Kissinger has an amazing story to tell and writes exceptionally well. He gives vivid descriptions of encounters with world leaders and of Washington politics. His reflections range over history, politics, culture in many countries, war, and US policy.He is full of surprises, sharp-edged, hilarious, philosophical, and always authoritative. Professor Kissinger doesn't use fancy words. He is never aloof. His purpose is to make the material understandable. Some passages about negotiations have perhaps more detail than one really wants.The last four years of the Viet Nam war figure prominently in the book. This book was absolutely amazing!I took about a year of accounting courses in college, but never quite learned the intricacies of financial statement analysis. I wanted to learn not only about corporate finance, but also how to analyze financial statements. Thus, my search was on.After researching book stores and reading forums online, I learned about this book, which I looked up on Amazon.com. I love books that get straight to the point, so when I saw that this book covered corporate financial management and financial statement analysis in under 300 pages, I was in!I purchased the book from Amazon and I read it in about two weeks. I literally could not put it down. The authors speak like human beings and actually make math and finance fun and interesting. In those two weeks alone, I not gained a better understanding of accounting, but I learned how to evaluate investments and make management decisions based on company finances.The book covers income statement analysis, balance sheet analysis, cash flow statement analysis, performance ratios, a bit of inventory management (like a financial intro to lean), and advanced capital expenditure analysis through concepts like discounted cash flow analysis.This book took me from feeling like I'd never understand certain things, to being able to discuss finance like an executive manager.I'm not kidding either, the book dives straight in and explains everything in a no nonsense approach.Financial Intelligence acted like a learning springboard for me by providing a foundation for me to read deeper into finance.I 100% recommend this book to anyone looking for a place to being their finance studies.

Although I have an extensive background in Finance, I chose to read this book to brush up my basics to progress in my career. To be honest, this book is one of the best investments I've made. It is one of the most simplified versions of understanding the core of any business i.e. its financial statements. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to either learn the financial side of business or simply re-touch with the basics in their free time. Very well written and excellent examples throughout each chapter make it very interesting and relatable in the real world.

I do have a few years (decades) of experience in the field - and many moons ago I completed most of the coursework for Ph.d. in accounting before deciding academia was not where I wanted to be. I taught the subject at the University level for more than 5 years and now train on this subject internationally. My background also includes working as an auditor and many years wearing the corporate controllers hat. I say this because I want to make clear that this book is not just for beginners, or people without a background in the field. I recommend this book to everyone. Accounting and finance are not easy subjects especially if you jump in and start with the technical aspects of it. Put simply the better you understand the numbers - the better your business decisions will be. I view this book as providing an excellent foundation - the more you build your core knowledge of the subject the better. Remember the key in business is making better business decisions - don't be overly impressed by people who can spout GAAP at you with in terms you don't understand. The real experts can, and should, be able to translate the rules in a fashion that aids in understanding (1) why the rule is there in the first place, and (2) how it impacts you business and the decisions it makes.This book is written in a fashion that will not put even non-accountants to sleep and it paints enough pictures with examples of accounting misdeeds to keep it interesting - and to really drive home how seemingly innocuous (in some cases) changes to how transactions are recorded and paint a very different picture of the health of an organization.If you are in business / work - do yourself, your future and your business a favor by increasing your understanding of the numbers. This book is a great place to start....

Great book to introduce you to the key concepts of finance, as they apply to every person in a company. If you're working in finance, you likely already know this information, but if you're in any other department, it is the perfect book. Easy to read, easy to understand, and I have been able to apply the ideas right away. I wish this was the introductory text in MBA programs - great place to start, as finance is, more than anything, a language. I am in sales and found the ideas a great reminder of how to position the financial value of by products. I encourage anyone who wants to get ahead in their job to read this, and then think about your company and how to apply the ideas. In this day and age, financial intelligence is critical to getting ahead!

Very good book! If you have no financial experience in your company and want to get there, this will help tremendously. I listen while I drive and then read in the rare slow moments of life. The way they lay it out helps non-financial management get a much clearer picture of what a business should and shouldn't be doing with their numbers.

Very descriptive, humorous & funny...as if you were truly alongside for the ride. Being a military brat fortunate enough to have lived in the PI's 87-91 I was able to spend many weekends with our house girls in their bario. I was also fortunate to have been able to travel to enjoy a true Filipino wedding. The authors description of daily life in the bario was dead on & brought back so many memories for me. It was as if I was reliving the experience again. As if I was smelling, seeing, tasting (as..pandisal...) all the experiences again. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. You truly have a way with words.

I happen to know the author personally although I haven't seen him in probably 20 years. Peter's writing has always made me laugh and this book does the same. I really enjoyed the pictures and recommend more in your blockbuster sequel. It was nice to see if the pictures matched my imagination. They didn't, they were much nicer than I had imagined. Great book and I'm proud of you Peter.

Fun and playful observations of Philippine culture by an American that lives in a rural town in Northern Luzon with his wife "Sweetie" and returns to the U.S. East Coast after the cold and snow has come and gone. A smooth read from cover to cover... well... from beginning to end via Kindle. If Philippine culture or living in the Philippines interests you this is a must read. If not, it is a fun read nonetheless.

This author has such a beautiful way with words. I really felt as if I were hanging out in the bario with him admiring the local flavor. Highly highly recommend this witty book.

Having a house built, and also married to an Ilocano woman for three and a half decades, I can relate to so many things in this book. I think the author has much more patience and understanding of the culture than I do. If you read, you can REALLY get insight into living in a remote province.

Everyone would benefit from reading this book. Most of us have no idea what the AC frequencies in everything electric that we use on a daily basis are having on our bodies and minds. This book explains the dangers in detailed and clear layman's language and how to minimize or counteract them with some products that are commonly known about.Bryant probably knows more about this subject than just about anyone as he has spent many years researching it and has personally tested practically all, if not all, of the products on the market that provide beneficial frequencies that the human body needs.It has been known in scientific circles that the earth's electromagnetic frequencies are absolutely essential for the health of humans and animals on earth. This was pointed out when Yuri Gagarin spent time in space and came back with many health problems, some of which were not able to be corrected. For that reason, NASA and the Russians have equipped their space shuttles, suits, etc. to provide the same frequencies as the ones the earth emits.This may well be one of the most important books you will ever read. This knowledge is crucial to maintaining good health especially as we age.

This book IS an introduction to PEMF but there are much better ones out there, check out the bibliography in the back of this book, however I agree that it's WRONG for Meyers to be pushing only one kind of machine, the iMRS, which is one of those multi level marketing outfits that try to make everyone a distributor, salesman, when you buy one of their machines. One or two additional comments is that "real" books about the subject, the ones mentioned in the biblio, for some reason, are enormously expensive!!!!!! And I don't know why? But Meyer's book doesn't hold a candle to those kind of books. The other thing, from what I can tell, is that the PEMF device business in extremely competitive, I would say cutthroat, and it's very hard to decide which of the numerous machines to buy plus just about all of them are VERY expensive so i't hard to know what to get because you're making a BIG financial investment. I won't say what machine I eventually got because I have some doubts about it as well. The fact of the matter is there is NO truly objective outfit out there that is testing and evaluating these devices so BUYER BEWARE. And the tragedy is that these are immensely valuable devices that undercut conventional medicine but are shrouded in secrecy and hard to evaluate information because they are REVOLUTIONARY and could very well overturn conventional medicine so for profit Western allotropic medicine will do everything it can to keep them in the shadows. The devices in general are much more current in Europe and Asia because those areas have always been more welcoming to integrative or alternative medicine. So before you purchase ANY PEMF device do as much research as you can, I've spent months at it, and I'm still not sure I made the right choice. However I am totally convinced of the importance of these devices they can help in ways that will dumbfound you, they're certainly the wave of the future and that's why the whole field is do heavily contested and competitive because there are billions if not trillions to be made off this methodology.

PEMF is emerging in a big way because it WORKS. From sports injuries to simply helping your body deal with all the electrosmog that is an unfortunate consequence of our connected world, PEMF is a technology you need to learn about if you are shooting for optimal health. On a personal note, a local chiropractor has a PEMF machine that helped me get my bradycardia reversed...I have been running 37-39 bpm for over a couple decades now, and had been told I would need a pacemaker (I kept putting it off, hoping to find a more natural resolution - and THIS IS IT!). After a less than 8 treatments (I call them that loosely - really, you just relax on a magnetic PEMF pad placed on a recliner/chair that looks like its out of the IKEA catalogue. I actually feel kind of guilty as the recliner is situated in a physical rehab area where everyone around me is grunting and stretching and I'm just relaxing and reading.) After a couple months of going for 30 minute treatments once a week, I took my pulse (which i do every few months just to keep an eye on it). and it was 52!!! Checked it again a couple days later...52!!!! WooHoo!

I'm a writer who took shorthand in high school "way back then". Typing on my computer while thinking is not always successful. So, I am refreshing my shorthand skills. I am looking forward to jotting down my plots and thoughts and adding them later to my writing on my computer files. Why anyone who knows about this wonderful skill would ever think that it has been replaced by computer applications has me confused. I loved shorthand "back then", and I love it now. Yaaaayyyyy.......

This is the 1929 edition of Gregg shorthand, with more brief forms and abbreviating principles than later editions. Later came "Gregg Shorthand Simplified" (1949) and "Diamond Jubilee" (1955 I believe). Make sure you get the edition you want or need; they are not all the same. ... Also, there was a 1916 edition that allegedly is the same as 1929. There were several editions before 1916 as well.

I have a couple Gregg Shrothand books now. This one is by far the best one. Why? The first lesson is tough on like shaped sounds. The K, G, R, and L are all shaped alike. Then the M and N. Followed by the T and D then thrown in is the H. When I learned International Morse Code this was the type of approach they used as well. The E and the T. Build form there to the I and the M followed by adding A and N. Etc. So far I am having fun scribbling notes. My hope is to become somewhat proficient in using shorthand because I suck at spellen and shorthand spells like I do.Now with that said.... I am just now getting to words and phrases.... Wish me luck!

It was what I wanted. I would like to have the transcribed lessons too in order to check my work; however, the book did not have any other than the first two lessons out of 70. There are 585 numbered paragraphs and I'll say of that amount there are 70% of them that needed a key to the shorthand practice letters. But, the book would be twice the size too 🙂

I studied shorthand back in the dark ages (l950's) and bought the miniature book, however time and aging eyes made it difficult to use with the tiny characters. So when I saw this I just had to purchase it. The larger print helps extremely!

These books were in great condition.. bought 2 from different sellers and both were pristine. I recently reconnected with a friend who I went to Moser Secretarial School, with (in the early 70's) when shorthand was a skill for what we now call Administrative Assistants. I was amazed at how much we could remember and wanted a source to help me with the parts that weren't so clear in my head. This book was the answer. The words are in alphabetical order and other parts for abbreviations(including some "brief forms") and goverment titles, frequently used phrases. I gave it 4 stars because I wish the words were on lined paper because it matters where you start and position it on the line order for it to be correct and readable.

This is the same book I used in high school. I bought it to relearn shorthand.

The exact book I used in high school in the '70's. Needed to take some classes for work and need to take a lot of notes in lectures. I brushed up on my shorthand so I could get the notes faster.
