Beginners will find this book helpful. The authors cover topics such as stretching paper, glazing, and mixing colors. Most emphasis is given to landscapes and outdoor scenes, but a section on flower painting is included as well. As the title suggests, the book includes important step-by-step instructions. The step-by-step demonstrations are accompanied by materials lists. Especially helpful are notes about color mixing. The novice doesn't have to guess at how the artist arrived at a color. NOTE: This book was originally published by Search Press in 2001 under the title "Working with Watercolour."

Just started trying painting, so far so good my .

As a beginner, I expected more technical details from this book. Nice examples of the experienced water artists but it doesn't have any further technical teachings.

As a beginner painter I think this collection of lessons is a little above my level but I will try following it along with a class.

Very interesting and logical book. Everyone should read this (no...those coal jobs are not coming back, you cannot turn back time). People need to be realistic. Biggest lesson from the book........those who can adjust get by....those who cannot change with the times don't. One surprising thing in the book (at least to me) is that often "government intervention" doesn't help at all. Throwing money at cities to prop up some industries, etc. just doesn't work because sometimes you cannot predict what will be the next "big" thing, what will survive, what won't. Like so many other things, some things sound good on paper and for one reason or another just fail. Things, industries, etc. become obsolete over time and you have to be able to either retrain or adjust.

Thoughtful, smart, and important book. Interesting observations regarding job development as it relates to new industries and higher education among the workforce, which form brain hubs that define today’s economy.Only quibbles have to do with characterization of Berkeley and San Francisco. Being that I have lived in both cities for about a 15 year stretch, I know something about the history and culture of both. To begin with Berkeley is an island, one that neither follows or cares what others think. It is an impulsive and innovative community that would place economic considerations way behind a number of other socially motivated priorities—this is not to assume that it any way correctly measures such priorities at all.Now San Francisco is another case. East San Francisco is mentioned as a part of the city slated for light manufacturing in vain hopes that industry will come back. I’m sure the author is aware that that district has been “slated” for industrial business for a long, long time due to its proximity to the docks and the type of business needs that took place in that district. Gone are breweries like Hamms and bakeries like Wonder Bread. Forgotten are two million service men and women of WWII who were siphoned through the Bay Area to serve overseas and the numerous laborers who built and repaired the machinery, planes, and countless other necessities of war.San Francisco resisted the youth of Hait Ashburry, the gay and lesbian revolution, and at times the Google high tech world that has found a home in this great city. The youth culture got old, and Castro and beyond found a home after arduous struggles and final acceptance. And the Mission District has strongly resisted being bought out, and I imagine still is resisting it.In all cases we are talking about culture and traditions versus money. It then comes down to a set of values, and good ones happen over a long stretch of time.The author’s notions on creative and vibrant environments as magnets or not for development of economic hubs is naive. Employing Jimi Hendrix/Seattle as an example how creative types won’t necessarily gravitate to a metropolis based upon a creative vibe is utter nonsense. Hendrix,though born in Seattle, lived mostly in Europe and New York when he wasn’t touring. His studio Electric Lady Studio is still located in Greenwich Village. So, what does he have to do with Seattle and a creative vibe? Very curious. Should stick with what you know.

I saw this book as a reference from another book on the implications and dynamics of the way in which supply chains have migrated from domestically to internationally based. It is excellent and remains extremely relevant and even predictive from being published in 2013.In the new geography of jobs, author Enrico Moretti discusses how the nature of US jobs and manufacturing has been changing for the last 30 years. The economy is becoming service based and offshoring of manufacturing is the norm as production migrates to where labor is cheaper. The author details how the size of the manufacturing labor force has been in almost monotonic decline and how even high technology content goods manufacturing quickly moves offshore despite the US housing the intellectual property. The author discusses how this is the natural consequence of the value chain that has been created where the service sector value add is what the US has come to dominate whereas the manufacturing value add is where low cost labor countries tend to have comparative advantage. The author then spends time on describing what high value service sector jobs entail, describing a job at Pixar for example. On the flipside of the decline in manufacturing is the growth in services and the author shows the growth in jobs associated with scientific R&D, software, pharmaceuticals and the internet- here the charts are the inverse and monotonically increasing. Unfortunately the magnitudes don't necessarily add up so therein lies part of the problem but the point is that the nature of where the US has a comparative advantage is changing and the areas of job growth vs decline are structural. The author spends a lot of time discussing how these sectors which are productive have huge spillovers to the surrounding areas and details the wages of base service jobs in areas of high vs low productivity and the ranges are enormous. The author spends a lot of time on how as the nature of jobs demanded is changing the geography of jobs is changing and gravitating towards the coasts where there are more tech related or finance related areas. The author discusses how the forces of agglomeration are strong as productivity feeds on itself as talented individuals come into close contact and as the geography of employment is changing as well as the education levels required to fill those labor gaps is changing the country is becoming polarized in opportunity set.The New Geography of Jobs discusses what labor transitions are occurring in the US right now and their effects on prices and opportunities. It gives good perspective on why the country is increasingly divided and see the world so different in opportunity set. The author discusses the economic consequences of the changes we are seeing and gives some policy advice on how to address them. One thing is hard to argue though which is that what value add the US can offer the global economy is fundamentally different to what it was 40 years ago and many of the changes which are creating conflict are structural. This is a must read to better understand the economic consequences of the changing nature of the US comparative advantage and what the country needs to consider when trying to address the negative consequences to certain subsets of the population who are most affected. The continued need of the US to focus on its human capital rather than its manufacturing capital though is almost a given.

I was hoping for more from this book than being led through Steyn's problems with a semi-official Canadian agency having the power to harass persons who sound off against Islam. They are in the form of columns written for Maclean's, National Review Online, Western Standard, Irish Times, Steynposts and other media. If you the reader of this review are unfamiliar with what a thin-skinned, quasi-religious entity can legally do when someone offends it in a state that claims to have jurisdiction over such trivia, you absolutely must read Steyn's book. You'll be left speechless.. Your reviewer readily admits that it would please him to see Quranic Islam disappear from the face of the earth. That barbaric, quasi-religious, misogynistic, closed-minded life- system, the tenets of which are to be observed in the current, cruel actions of ISIS, has been a canker on non-Muslim society ever since Muhammad had his first visit from the Angel Gabriel. I'm pretty sure that what I write here would qualify to get me into legal trouble in any one of the so-called human-rights-protective countries of Western Europe. Everyone in the USA should be thankful that we live in a place where we can still say what we think and be Constitutionally protected.

One of the disturbing aspects of todays society is the effort to "shut you up" if you don't agree with the prevailing (in the media) orthodoxy. I assumed (I know, I know) that free speech was accepted in Western Civilization. Wrong!! The United states has the First Amendment guaranteeing us the right to differ, and say so- out loud. That is NOT the case in Canada, England, France, and Australia among others. There you can be fined, and/or jailed for speaking your mind. It's called Hate Speech, so shut up! Mark Steyn was taken to court by the Canadian Islamic Counsel for quotingIslamic scholars about the meaning of their religion. Wait until you read about what the Imams have to say about what they truly believe! Definitely a MUST read.

His arguments in the areas of free speech and demographic suicide being committed by western governments need to be read and heeded by citizens of all countries who want to retain their freedoms and uniqueness - so that they can then take steps to deal with their pathetic governing classes who have so many once fine countries on the road to ruin.Mark Steyn has been ringing the alarm bell for some time. Are people listening?

I resonate with Mark Steyn's cynical sense of humor so I read his stuff when though it can be a bit depressing. This book covers his trip with Mclean's through the human rights court processes in Canada in the late 2000s. Entertaining as always but kind of chilling to think how the politically correct bureaucratic left can ruin your life, at least in Canada. Islam is here to stay and getting bigger all the time. This book will explain what is happening not only in Maple Leaf country but around the world, and why those of us who are non-Muslims in the West should be very concerned. A good read.

Read this while you still can. The PC Police have taken over in Europe and Canada, making even the opinions of a character in a fiction novel a crime, as an author in Canada recently discovered. In a world where Islamic terrorist actions are labelled "workplace violence", "insanity", and even "anti-Islamic activity", this book will be one of the first thrown onto the fire along with the Constitution. Although I have only done approximately 20 puzzles in this book ranging from easy to hard, I have found that a number of the puzzles had more than one solution, meaning that if I interchanged four numbers I could get a different solution than the one in the back of the book. This should not happen. It has never happened to me before with any other puzzle book that I completed and there have been many. That is why I gave it one star.

Not just "The Largest"; this has become now my "My Favorite" Sudoku book in the history of the universe. The book is well-made - binding is sturdy, puzzles are easy to read, and pages are easy to write on and thick enough that puzzles don't bleed through to the other side. And the puzzles are nicely graded in 5 degrees of difficulty: "Easy" puzzles are just that, "Medium" puzzles are slightly harder, "Hard" puzzles are challenging but still quite doable. "Grueling" puzzles are, well, grueling (I can solve about half of them), and "Diabolical" puzzles are beyond me (so far - but I'm not giving up!). There are 400 puzzles of each type. In other words, this collection is large enough, and the range in difficulty is wide enough that there's lots for Sudoku lovers of any skill level to enjoy and grow on. Kudos and thanks to Kiyo Tanaka for this wonderful collection!Just one (very nitpicky) comment: In my edition (2014), the solutions given on page 424 for puzzles 1533 - 1536 are incorrect. There appears to be a printer's error, as these are actually just repeats of the solutions for puzzles 1525 - 1528, two rows above.

I'm out of work all week with a pulled ligament in my right knee, couldn't even bend my right leg the first week and this is my second week of recovery. This book has helped my brain from rotting with all the junk on TV now. Seriously a lot of these shows are appalling and I can't believe they are on public television! So between this book, reading books, and some history lessons from Assassins Creed I may survive the week. Plus I absolutely love that it has diabolical as a level of difficulty! Now I feel like an evil genius every time I solve one!

Lots of puzzles have alternative solution, and I don't like that.I checked it, when couldn't find a logical solution, I switched the numbers from "Answers" in remaining empty cells, and got an alternative correct solution. In easy ones - it's not a problem, as there aren't many remaining empty cells without logical way to fill - so one can just guess and get to the end, finding 2 ways to finish. But the hard ones - just a lot of work and lot's of hours. I can't finish in one sitting.

It is enormousHowever, there are way too many puzzles that have 2 or more solutions based on your choice of last tile placement. I much prefer every move to have only one correct answer. Makes me feel cheated. Shows theres less thought put in to the making of each puzzle. Less smart than most. However, I would say the difficulty level is higher than others

For people that really enjoy Sudoku puzzles and like being able to find the only solution, this book is annoying. I’d get as far as I could in a puzzle before finding myself I had to guess... after the 10th puzzle of guessing and always getting it correct, I realized that’s not coincidence. Multiple solutions. Sounds silly but I like the challenge of Sudoku puzzles, not guessing. I also didn’t like the lack of variation I found from previous books. This book only includes traditional 9x9 puzzles (no 16x16, jigsaw, sum-doku, etc) Book is well made though.

I buy Sudoko books for my husband every Christmas as one of his gifts then more sudoko books during the year. When I saw this giant book that offers over 2,000 puzzles I was ecstatic. He loves it!! My only disappointment is that it doesn’t have 2,000 puzzles but far less.

This was purchased as a gift, but the pages are heavier than other puzzle books - good for erasing if necessary!!!
