The 2nd edition of Roadside Geology of Washington is such a HUGE upgrade from the 1st, I don't think calling it a 2nd edition does it justice. This book is essentially a total re-write; the only thing left from the original seems to be the title. While the original was somewhat sparsely-illustrated with two-color diagrams and black & white photos, this edition is lavishly illustrated with beautiful color photos, diagrams, and geologic maps. The maps, in particular, are incredibly helpful, with annotations on field stops along various highways. The introductory chapter gives a brief background into the rocks, history and regional tectonic context of Washington. While this is quite succinct and straightforward for the lay-person, those of us with some geologic background will probably find ourselves wishing for a little more. Other than that small nit-pick, this is a fantastic book that will stay in the glove compartment of my car for ready reference.

This book is absolutely outstanding! I've been teaching geology at Central Washington University for 25 years (Nick Zentner) and this book has taught me so much new material. It's written for anyone....but the content is definitely not watered-down. The text, maps, and photos are packed with detail - and there is much to enjoy. The maps are my favorite part of the book - handsome, clear, and full of detail. The gorgeous photos are also a major plus - all taken by author Miller. Do you have the yellow-covered first edition of Roadside Geology of Washington? This blue-covered book blows that one out of the water! Buy it for those in your life who appreciate the natural history of our beautiful state. Thank you Marli Miller & Darrel Cowan!

It's just great to finally have this 2nd Edition in hand! I have gone through two copies of that fine 1st Edition of Roadside Geology of Washington in the more than thirty years since it first came out. A few years ago, when I saw what an improvement Marli Miller made with the 2nd Edition of Roadside Geology of Oregon, I hoped that an updated and better illustrated Washington version of this series would become available soon. Well, it's finally here, and it is very good! More driving routes and more detailed information make this a significant upgrade for the citizen student and professional alike. Best read before travel, then referenced along the routes, this book will have you looking for safe pull-outs to savor the fascinating geology of Washington State.

On the one hand, it's a fantastic improvement over the previous edition. The color photos and plates are fantastic, as is using the water resistant paper. It's a complete rewrite. On the other hand, it's sort of dense for a mass market book; the old edition was a much easier read, written at say a high school level for someone with no earth science background. The new book is written more for a college level reader. Though it's more accurate and precise, there is a lot of jargon that is used that might be too dense for some. Personally, I love it, but potential readers should be aware.

This is definitely a book for citizens of Washington state. Ever wonder what that white band of rocks are, or why Yakima has rock folds, or Why when you drive to Spokane there are random Boulders in Farmer's Fields.Well this book with tell you were to find these oddities and why they occurred. Even for non-geeks there are many interesting facts. The book is well developed and you can easily locate the different areas of WA state you may want to research. The book is written in an easy to read style, enough information to whet your appetite but not so much you fall asleep. Well worth the price for Rock hounds, Budding Geologist, or anyone who drives the highways and byways of Washington.

Great update to the classic first edition! Geology is a science of the senses. The look, the feel and sometimes even the smell is what makes tromping around looking at outcrops so much fun. The addition of color photography and maps adds tremendously to the value of this book.I appreciate all the work that went into this book to make my travels through Washington state geology more understandable. Adding color makes it so much easier to understand where I am (map) and what I'm looking at.

The photos are great, the geologic maps and road logs are quite detailed, the mileage markers are very helpful. Dr Miller's work sets a standard for excellence that - hopefully- future books in Roadside Geology will emulate. My wife and I have made several visits to Washington, always marvelling at the geology, and we look forward to future visits with this book in hand.

I have the first edition, and this update is a worthy one. Retire the old one. The only thing I miss is a map index, that would put page numbers on a highway map. But a small complaint. It is a bit of a hard read for those of us without a geology background, but worth the effort.
