This was an "instant book" written during the midst of the Tonya debacle, and I really hoped for a chapter or epilogue that "finished" the story. It isn't there. Don't bother with this book. It is an excellent story of Tonya's growing up with an abusive mother and her devotion to skating, written by news reporters from "The Oregonian" newspaper. Unfortunately all these years later, nobody bothered finishing this book.I regret buying this.
When I initially considered this book, I was unaware that the book was written shortly after these events occurred. I thought that this book had been written much more recently. There is the movie "I, Tonya" that has been released this month. But I have not seen it. I think that if I had seen it, I might have been aware that these stories were written during that time.Because of there not being much more about the events that happened during and after the trial(s), I was disappointed in the story. But the author is not responsible for that disappointment. It is my own fault because I didn't do enough research to know that this is not a super recent novel.Disappointments aside, I think it was well told. The author took their time giving the necessary backstory, but not getting bogged down with unnecessary details. The author also did a good job telling Tonya's story without allowing their personal feelings to become part of the story too.
Terrible writing. Did Tonya write this or did the author also not finish high school? Simplistic and disorganized and boring.
It did report the facts. Writing was sub par
OK but I read it because I am an ex-figure skater. Might not be all that interesting to those without a skating background.
GOOD READ
Very vague and written by someone who doesn’t know about skating. The author says “started with a triple jump†but watching the performance on YouTube, anyone can see it’s a “triple lutzâ€. Take that and apply it to every page / factoid.
Reads like a children’s book and full of inaccuracies. Thrown together in a just few days as a cash-grab before the 1994 Winter Olympics. The results of which naturally wouldn’t be in this haphazardly written “bookâ€.
