I am a 70 y/o retired Registered Nurse and have had heel pain/plantar fasciitis for nearly 2 years. Four to five times a year I race/walk for fun. After using the at home treatment that Dr. Smith rec, I completed a 6 mile race. After the race, I applied the frozen cup water rub, rec by Dr. Smith, to my foot. After 2 hrs of rest, I was able to resume my activities. For at least 8 weeks, I will refrain from races and training, rest my foot and try Dr. Smith's recommendations. After the 8 wks of rest, treatment and exercises, I will f/u with my podiatrist and decide whether or not I will have/need surgery. Will do an update to this review at that time. This book should be recommended reading for patients diagnosed w/heel pain/Plantar Fasciitis.

The only real take away from this book is to stretch your calf muscles and rest for 4 weeks. Written well but lacks comprehensive stretching.

This is the most knowledgeable and sensible book on plantar fasciitis that I've found. I definitely recommend it if you are struggling with this tenacious condition.

Well written and answered so many questions I had. The author has vast experience dealing with foot problems and the information she gave was easy to understand and implement into a daily program.

Nothing new. Waste of money. All advice could be summed up in 2 pages.

Everyone, will at some time in their life, suffer from foot or heel pain. Doctor Smith, a practicing podiatrist, diagnoses and treats foot diseases and deformities. This plain language book begins with a look at how to identify whether heel pain is from Plantar Fasciitis, and injury, or over use. The next section involved self-treatment through exercise, shoes, orthotics, and lifestyle choices. The final section covers medical diagnose and treatment from a cortisone injection to surgery. Each chapter contains an explanation, options, key points, and an action step. The action steps for self-treatment are especially easy to understand and implement and can fit any budget. Illustrations highlight tips or topics under discussion. Endnotes are included.

I feel so much better just having read Dr. Smith's book! Her information is neither scary nor narrow minded. I now have lots of information, which was clearly and simply explained with illustrations. I have options that will easily fit my lifestyle. Her advice is encouraging and inspires confidence. Even her descriptions of "advanced options" reduce anxiety!

This book provides very useful information in a clearly-written, well illustrated format! Last fall, my son developed plantar fasciitis while running cross-country. This book provided us with great tools to improve his foot health and to manage pain should he have a flare-up. Thanks, Dr. Smith, for giving us this much-needed information so he can begin running again! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is suffering from plantar fasciitis.

I'll first give my take on the book then provide a brief summary. Author Neil Shubin is an awesome man and author. His personal anecdotes came at perfect times and flowed with the book in harmony. His writing style is congenial, conversational, humorous, candid, and i'd go as far to say inspirational. Prospective readers - especially those who aren't enthralled by evolution or anatomy - might predetermine the text as being bland and heavy. It's quite the opposite; I found myself laughing many times and perhaps the only weakness of the book is that it's too short. I personally enjoy shorter books because I enjoy delving into a few different topics a month. For only 200 pages there is a hell of a lot to learn and so much great information jam-packed in an easy-to-understand way. The author is an acute articulator, and has a good habit of recapitulating unfamiliar topics. This is an unconventional evolution book. Scientist Theodosius Dobzhansky once famously said "Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution". This could have been the name of this book. Having read numerous evolution books before, I would have thought that attaining higher appreciation for it than I already have was an unattainable goal, but reading this book shattered that notion because my appreciation for evolution is substantially heightened. Nothing is more enlightening than finding out the truth of your existence up to your very faults.The book is split by 11 chapters. The first four explore the theme of how we can trace the same organ in different creatures. I'll briefly summarize:- Chapter 1-4:The author starts by describing his legendary trip to Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, Canada. He describes the struggles and the significance of his finding: The Tiktaalik; a creature from the late Devonian period (375 million years ago) that currently holds as the most well-established evolutionary transition from fish to amphibian. I've read about the Tiktaalik before in one of Dawkin's books, but I was surprised to find out that the author of this book actually discovered it. His expedition is a fascinating read in itself because the author is a great storyteller, and seems to be a really humble, laid-back, and fun guy. He all of the latter not only when sharing his personal experiences, but when speaking on behalf of his chosen subjects as well. He describes how he ended up near the arctic - and on the Pennsylvania highways - when looking for his fossils of choice. He gives a general introduction of where and how - using paleontology and evolution - you would find fossils. He elucidates the difference between fish and amphibian (through bone structure and limbs) and mammal and reptile. There's a chapter dedicated to teeth. Teeth are important and extremely helpful when identifying or distinguishing differences among animals (i.e. reptiles and mammals). There's a chapter dedicated limb structure, specifically the hand and arm. The developmental difference between our arms and a fish's fins are very similar early on in development but become vastly different through the process (inside the egg). The author explains why and shows experiments involving the relevant genes for such functions (those involving the ZPA tissue and Sonic Hedgehog gene manipulation, there's a chapter to this called "Handy Genes").- Chapter 5-11:In each one of these chapters, certain body parts of ours are to our distant ancestors. In other words, we get to explore, interpret, analyze, compare and contrast the our body functions with our distant ancestors. We figure out the inception of many body parts (and functions) and why they evolved to work the way they do for us. Specifically, there's a chapter on: the head, entire body, scent, vision, and ears.Some interesting stuff by chapter: In the field of Embryology, - the study of Embryos, or fetuses - we see that all animals are alike at their very initial gestation stage, with four little swellings called arches that develop around what comes to be the throat area. This is explained in more detail in the book but the fascinating thing is that these arches, depending on the species, all come to have a different but similar function in the body as the conception process gets underway. In the book, the example of comparison are humans and our very distant ancestor shark. Cranial nerve structure is also discussed and compared. Also discussed are headless animals - primitive ones - and the origins of our notochord. There's a whole section on the similarity of active (and inactive) genes among completely different specifies. What happens if you remove tissue, or add certain DNA strands in fruitful area? The evolution of scent is interesting because fish evolving to leave the water and thus become an amphibian, it requires major changes because there are 2 kinds of smelling genes: one for water and one for air. The chapter on scent is epic and so is the proceeding one on vision and then Hearing. We can trace major events in our eyes by analyzing certain eye genes that we share with other creatures. Mammals have the same ear bones as fish, the difference being that wish don't have ears. We come to see that there's major contrast between the functions of these bones for different groups of animals, like mammals and amphibians. These differences are part of why we label an animal to be a "mammal" or "amphibian" in the first place. Our middle ear bones are the malleus, incus and stapes. We come to see that the malleus and incus evolved from jawbones.Of the million years of life, Homo Sapiens have survived extinction and for the time being remain extant. But this doesn't mean that we don't have our problems. There's no preternatural creator ghost behind the complexity or susceptibility of our bodies, but even better: an evolutionary explanation of everything in our body from our genetic workings to our genotypes. Because of such primitive origins, our bodies aren't fully accustomed to certain things and thus thanks to our fish ancestors we develop things like hernias or hangovers. So why is this better then? For one, because it makes perfect sense! And two, by having a natural understanding of our anatomy, we can spearhead our way into the understanding of imperative issues - like disease or congenital defects - that shackle and sometimes terminate the life of many good individuals. This is very important, and so is this book. I'm grateful I read it.

Not having a particularly strong scientific background, but interested in nature, I found this book to be approachable, enjoyable, and actually quite mind blowing! While I knew some of the basics of evolution, this book took my understanding to a whole different level. Skilfully weaving the realms of paleontology, anatomy and genetics the author explains how we came to be in our present form in a way that average people can understand. If you are interested in evolution in particular, or just nature in general, this is a book for you. Highly recommended!

I'm so happy I ordered this book. First - it's gorgeous. I love the feel of the cover, the look of the book itself, and the photography of the bakes. So far, I've made the Shenandoah Apple Cake and it was an easy to follow recipe, with detailed instructions that don't bog you down, and it tasted amazing (seriously, I ended up having to hide it from my husband). Someone said they didn't like the author's name dropping, but it doesn't bother me. In fact, I only heard of this book because Tim Kaine shared it on his instagram, so maybe the name dropping paid off. Also, someone else complained that the ingredients are too difficult to find or exotic - I have two thoughts about this. One is that I don't think any of the ingredients are so exotic that you couldn't find them. Two, I don't buy specialty cookbooks because they include recipes I could have thought of myself. I want it to have unique ingredients and combinations that make the recipes special. For example, one recipe calls for Paw Paws. You might not be able to find them in grocery stores, but Paw Paws are a native Virginian fruit that are easy to find at farmer's markets when they're in season. So maybe this is too difficult for some people, but I bought a cookbook from a rural Virginian bakery - why should he exclude recipes that reflect the local culture?Anyways. I loved this book, and am happy to have it sitting on the shelf among my other favorite cookbooks.

I was looking forward to getting this book, as I love Southern cooking/baking, but it's definitely not what I expected. Some of the recipes look good, but most are full of uncommon ingredients or complicated directions & the constant name-dropping by the author is annoying.

I visited The Red Truck Bakery in Marshall, VA for the first time a month ago. It was a delightful place and the food they serve is really wonderful. I had a tuna sandwich for lunch and tried their Shenandoah Valley Apple Cake for dessert. I noticed that they had cakes in various flavors that were made with 'hooch'. I mean, who can resist that?? So when I somewhat by accident realized that they had a cookbook coming out this month, I jumped at the chance to 're-visit'the Red Truck. It is filled with beautiful pictures, fantastic recipes and snippets of interesting stories. If you can't visit the actual storefront, this book is the next best thing. I can't wait to try some of these recipes.

I am so excited to have this cookbook! Firstoff, I love cookbooks in general and was very excited when I saw this was coming out. The book is full of beautiful pictures of the bake goods he sells in the bakery and of beautiful Fauquier County. I am so excited that he shared the recipes of some of my favorite items to get in the store. I take my kids in there often for their special treats. Thank you so much for sharing these recipes with us! The Cherry Almond Bars and Quiche are AMAZING!

I'm not certain I'd give it a single star. I'm baking the biscuits now. A puddle of butter and dough so cold that there is no way 16-three inch biscuits are going to be done in 14 minutes. I doubt the insides will be done for at least 25 minutes. And the ingredients list didn't indicate that the salt was divided, either. An ingredient that if overused can have very bad outcomes. First recipe = fail. And, a pricey book for only 75 recipes. I never write reviews...

I'm giving this book 5 stars because it is a fine collection of southern recipes. Sadly, it centers on cakes, pies, cookies and sweets rather than breads, quick breads,scones, etc. Not enough of those recipes to warrant my keeping it.

This is an excellent cookbook. I ordered one for myself and then several more for gifts. There are so many wonderful recipes, with easy to find ingredients, simple well explained steps and photos that will make your mouth water. In addition there is fun background info and notes about the Bakery’s interesting history. I have been to both of their sites numerous times and am delighted that they have shared many of their recipes. After trying three of them I can’t wait to make more. Enjoy!

This is a beautiful book with recipes that seem achievable. We made the ham quiche and it turned out great. Our 2019 kitchen focus is better utilizing the KitchenAid stand mixer—this cookbook is good inspiration. The anecdotes peppered throughout make it an interesting read. Cover and spine are high quality. No built in bookmark. Good and numerous illustrations.

A beautifully packaged, well detailed book of two of my favorite director's films. I look forward to many hours of reading pleasure and recollection. Thank you, Coen brothers. Thank you Ian Nathan!

I love reading and will nearly always pick reading over watching. Therefore when I do watch something I’m very selective that said I’ve seen everything the Coen brothers have done.For me this book was an informative look into their lives and how they started down this road. I’m not saying there’s much here for diehard fans or people looking for a more in-depth look. But for a fan of their films who previously knew very little about them I found it interesting.I discovered how they started a lawn mowing business to earn the $400 required to buy Vivatar super-8. And their film making career was launched.There’s some lovely pictures and quotes and as a huge fan of their films I really enjoyed it. Talking of their films I’ve been trying to narrow the list and pick my favourite but I’ve decided it’s an impossible task.I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Aurum Press.

The Coen Brothers by Ian Nathan is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late January.Being a fan and fellow Minnesotan, I was excited for this book, its photography, and perhaps gentle analysis of the Coen Brothers' films, but I draw a thick, wary line at Nathan insinuating that St Louis Park (once referred to a St Louis when talking about their junior high school) is 'nearby' Brainerd when they're at least 120 miles apart, uneven syntax (particularly straight-up sentences inside of parentheses if something is vaguely apropos), and hit or miss photos (off-topic, on-topic, or not appearing at all). So, yeah, a kind gesture and respectful toward these filmmakers, but frustrating.

I enjoyed reading this book about one of my favorite director/writers. The book chronologically presents the Coen Brothers from their beginnings in Minnesota to their latest movie. I really enjoyed many of the behind the scenes stories. The text includes a lot of wonderful photographs. Anyone who loves movies will enjoy this book.

Before I even opened this book I was in love with the cover! It will be going on my shelf facing out so I can look at it. It comes in a slip cover box. Then....it gets better...the quotes! A page turner of quotes along with the photos are simply fabulous. A great resource of all their work.

When people ask me what my favorite movies are, I list off directors instead...and the Coen Brothers are at the top of my list. I have seen every one of their movies multiple times. They are brilliant writers and directors in my opinion and if they are involved in a film then they can have all my movie-watching money.The Coen Brothers: The iconic filmmakers and their work is a self-explanatory title that tells you exactly what you're going to get when you open the cover. It offers a biography of Joel and Ethan Coen, shares insight into family dynamics, covers pretty much all of their movies in chronological order, summarizes the storylines, talks about the inspirations - how the setting or events relate to real-life experiences, discusses the importance of particular scenes, incorporates reasoning behind actor choices, gives a look inside the business of filmmaking, and so forth. Overall, this book shed new light on the various films which I wholeheartedly appreciated. I suppose you can spend a few hours researching this information on your own but the author has already organized all of it in this one place with vibrant photographs on almost every page to serve as visual aids. The result is a very deserving centerpiece for any fan's coffee table or bookshelf.As I write this review, Christmastime is closing in and although the appropriate activities are listening to seasonal music, baking cookies, and wrapping gifts, all I can think about right now is watching some sort of overcomplication of humanity's flaws and all the blood-soaked Minnesota evil I can muster. "Comedy flows from the horror, the horror bleeds out of the comedy." ...and another Coen Brothers' marathon is my present to myself. I’ve been a fan of the Coen brothers since watching Blood Simple many years ago, indeed I loved the film so much that I pestered the guy in my local video store to give me the poster off his wall. Ian Nathan follows their career from their early Super 8 movies right up to present day and has sound bites from people closest to them. A good book that has some great behind the scenes info and tries to get behind what makes the brothers tick.
