Poetry is a hard one for me to review because I really haven’t reviewed a whole lot of it, and it’s also something highly subjective. So keep that in mind when moving forward, what works for me may not work for you and vice versa.I quite like the collection presented here. It speaks of the poet’s experiences with love, trama, self-discovery, healing and mental illness. The book does contain subjects that can be difficult to read about, but she included a list of trigger warnings in the beginning just in case anyone needs that heads up.Some of the poems really spoke to me and even though a few of them were only a line or two long I found myself re-reading them a few times, especially those that spoke about depression and the way people view you vs. the way you view yourself. The imagery she uses in her poems is beautiful even in those that cut deeper and leave you raw. I find that reading other people’s experiences with the same things I deal with help me process my own issues, sometimes in different ways than I would have done on my own. It’s an interesting healing process that sort of opens myself up to other options.As a part of the LGBTQA community, I also value the experiences she shared with her own sexual and gender identities and I think she did a wonderful job of really capturing the emotions of self-discovery from fear to acceptance.Louve -ch is definitely one to look out for in the poetry world, and I thank her for sharing something so personal and providing what could be inspiration and healing to others going through similar experiences.

the author shows such vulnerability with her experiences including rape, ptsd, depression, anxiety, trauma, LGBT issues and advice. she never appears as a victim, her words are powerful, guiding us all to heal. she is a influencer of good. she shows us that no matter how dark life gets, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. I read a poem from the book at least once a day and it helps me survive my own mental health. as an lgbt author she does an excellent job bringing many issues together including that with gender identity, sexual identity, love, heartbreak as well as the struggles to be a woman in todays society, eschpeially a gender fluid lesbian/pansexual/demisexual. her journey is inspiring. a must read for poetry.

She saved me, before I even I purchased this book, she already grabbed me and pulled me out. You feel the pain, and the love written amongst the pages. Yet even with darkness surrounding the words a light shows cleverly hidden between the letters. I’ve never been so moved in my life, or been shown who I truly am inside until I found her. I told her my story, and how she played a part in it, and I want to repay her with this review. Buy it, read it, borrow it from someone and save a life. Save your own. I promise you’re not alone and the poems inside will nourish your heart and soul. I promise.

Seriously the best ever! I feel, see, taste every word she writes. Her words paint a picture such as no one before has been able to do. She reaches deep into my souls and touches my very core. Everyone of her poems is explosive with instensity. I am amazed, that it’s even a possibility to express such deep rooted and raw emotions. I Love, Love, Love her poems and I am telling everyone I know to read her poems. It’s a book to keep near by and read over and over-to savor each word!!! What an inspiration and healing too... so needed by human kind especially today..........

This book was intentionally a gift for my niece who had a terrible secret which she is now just seeking help for. In no way shape or form should this book be considered a self help book. The author in my mind has stepped off the cliff and is wallowing away in her/his own pity party. A sophomoric, I give up manual for people that are suicidal or are thinging about ending it all.

I’ve been reading a lot of poetry book lately about relationships and self worth. But The wolf & Her moon was a book I needed before I knew I needed it. It was so much more. I felt understood and validated from her writing about child abandonment to mental illnesses and self harm. To loving again. I could read it 1000000 times. Always find a new page to connect with.

I love this book and all it’s contents, i Never thought I would like poetry but after picking this book up I was blown away at how these words she arranged in such a way would make me feel. This book has all the feels. I would highly recommend.

All the eyewittness books are awesome. I wish I had the money for the new ones that come with the CD Roms, but that's why the old ones (that are all the same text) are so much cheaper, so I'll take it!.

My assumption is that a DK Eyewitness Book entitled "Aztec, Inca & Maya" would devote sections to each of the three great civilizations that Spanish explorers encountered and eradicated in the 16th century. The Aztec empire stretched between the Pacific and the Atlantic costs of Mesoamerica, the Maya kingdom was found in the eastern part of Mesoamerica, and the Inca Empire stretched 4,000 miles along the western coast of South America. But this book considers the people of these regions to be a mosaic of tribes and nations so that most of the chapters are topical, talking about food and drink, religious life, masks, and such in terms of all of the cultures that apply. There are a few specific chapters devoted to the Incas and their ancestors and Cities of the Andes, but most toss in everything together.I have to admit, I do not find this approach to work anymore than one about Mediterranean cultures that lumps Spain, Italy and Greece together with the likes of Portugal, Sicily, and Crete thrown in for good measure. In this volume the Olmecs, Teotihuacans, and Toltecs are thrown in for good measure, but not so that you can have anything close to a clear conception of the specific cultures. There are some topics where it makes sense to talk about multiple cultures, such as the Human sacrifice by the Incas and Aztecs, but that does not apply to all of these topics. Consequently, I am tempted to get different colored highlighters and color code the three main cultures throughout the book so it is easier to make the connections.As always, the chief attraction of this Eyewitness Book is that it is filled with photographs of artifacts from museums around the world, from the Archaeological Museum in Lima the National Palace in Mexico City to the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale in Florence and the Rietberg Museum in Zurich (a subtle reminder that a lot of New World treasures made their way to Europe). Most of us will never get to see a Toltec coyote warrior inlaid with mother-of-pearl, the Gateway of the Sun at Tiahuanaco, or a "teponaztli" (horizontal drum) in person. "The Los Angeles Times Book Review" called one of these volumes "Like a mini-museum between the covers of a book," which is so on point that DK always puts that quote on the back. Almost as important, Elizabeth Bauedano provides detailed captions for the illustrations so that you know what you are looking at and what it means. Consequently "Aztec, Inca & Maya" works better as a supplemental source than as an introduction to these fascinating civilizations.

This is another excellent entry in the Eyewitness Books series, for young readers. The illustrations, as always, are wonderful. The slick pages speak to a quality production. The text is written well and conveys information accessible to the series' audience.The volume begins with an historical perspective on the three civilizations--Aztec, Maya, and Inca. After that, as with other volumes in the series that focus on civilizations, we read of the everyday life and context of the people being examined. What topics are considered? Farming, hunting/fishing, cities, family and home life, food and drink, religion, medicine, literacy and numbers, clothes, the arts, and so on. All discussions provide enough detail to give young readers a pretty good sense of each society.This particular work ends with the Spanish conquest of the New World and, with it, the end of these three impressive societies.So, to summarize. . . . A strong entry in the series of Eyewitness Books. Young readers interested in these early civilizations will enjoy this work.

I'm a huge fan of the DK Eyewitness series, but even so, I could not like this book despite the usual gorgeous photographs.The pages were arranged thematically and the different cultures (Aztec, Inca, Maya, Toltec, Olmec, Moche, Mixtec, Nazca...) were so intermixed that it became painful to keep which was which straight--and I already knew a nontrivial amount about most of them!The SLJ wrote in their review, "Although the pictures are bright, clear, and attention grabbing, the text is just random facts scattered across the pages. These majestic cultures are done a disservice by this weightless flitting from topic to topic." I couldn't agree more. SKIP this one!

this book said it was okay for middle school kids and i found it to be a little too childish even for that. some good information, but would have liked more of it.

Common Sense InvestingI found a lot to like about the The Little Book of Common Sense Investing: The Only Way to Guarantee Your Fair Share of Stock Market Returns by John C. Bogle. Mr. Bogle was the founder of The Vanguard Group and is famous for creating the world’s first index mutual fund in 1975, the Vanguard 500 Index Fund.The logic of his index fund was to invest in a large number of stocks, all the stocks comprising the S&P 500, to make money from the combination of their growth and dividends. This is a departure from the more common view of investing in undervalued stocks to make money from an increase in their stock value.Bogle makes a convincing argument that the best way to get the value from the stock market is to invest in all the stocks by buying mutual funds based on indexes of the market that invest in all the stocks.The author points out that the real net income from stock investments is the investments’ gain minus the cost of the investments. The costs are relatively easy to determine in the case of retail brokers charging for a stock trade when buying or selling stocks. However, the costs are much more complicated for mutual funds because, in addition to the cost of the trade, in many cases there is an annual incentive sales fee for the broker for up to five years (up to 1.5% a year according to the author). I had no idea that there were hidden sales fees in addition to the purchase fee charged by the brokers. In addition to annual fees, most mutual funds typically have additional management fees of 2 to 3%. In comparison, index funds have low management fees (often .4% or lower) with no hidden sales fees.What is more disturbing is that 99% of mutual funds significantly underperform the S&P 500 index. When the excessive costs combined with the underperformance of mutual funds are compared to S&P index funds, the long term income differences are shocking. The net return after taxes of $10,000 invested in an indexed fund from 1980 to 2005 would have been $76,200 versus $16,700 for other mutual funds (for those mutual funds that survived). This represents 456% more net income to the investor with far less risk.If you are one of the 85% of investors who let their broker "manage" their assets, Bogle’s book may keep you awake at night. To sleep better, I switched to low cost, low risk index funds.The author’s perspective is unique since he invented the very first indexed funds. It is a little like reading Thomas Edison's thoughts about the light bulb. Bogle knows the issues and history of investing in indexes versus other types of mutual funds.This "common sense investing" book was easy to read and easy to understand. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting their investments to produce more income with less risk. Five Stars and hats off to the founder of index investing.

This book was an awesome read to a new-comer in the scene of investing. I'm not sophisticated in finance. Nor am I wanting to become too knowledgeable in this topic. I just needed to understand the basic to plunge in and invest in an easy, simple portfolio. But doing so takes a whole lot more understanding than just following a simple portfolio recipe. To make my simple portfolio, I dived into Mr Bogle's book. He explained how things work in the finance world, at least enough for me to feel confident about the decisions I'm now making in the finance department. I would recommend this to any beginner investor seeking more knowledge in the field of finance.

Great Book for the basics of investing with a strong focus on Index Funds. I suggest this be read by employees of firms that gave them limited info on their 401K. All the basics are here in this book. I have been invested for 12 years in Index funds. There have been up and downs but overall I am way ahead.

Everyone should read this in their 20s before filling out the paperwork for their first workplace 401K. If you read this one book you'll know enough to invest sensibly for retirement without getting ripped off by financial product salespeople, and you'll understand more about investing than 85% of the general population.

SO helpful. I went over this book with my money manager, and no surprise, he had all this BS to say about how Bogle is wrong. Needless to say, I fired the money manager. Investing has always seemed mysterious, which is what they want you to think! With this and a few other books, I feel just competent enough to do it myself (with a little help from friends and the Bogle website).

Got me up to speed in understanding why passive index fund investing is the only worry free long term strategy that consistenly wins, and why active trading always returns to the mean. Mr. Bogle makes a solid argument repeatedly, by approaching the same question from multiple directions and supporting it with unimpeachable numbers. It reinforced some views that I had already developed on my own, but also clued me in to the adverse effects over time of high expense ratios and transaction costs.When I finished the book I liquidated a stock that pays a decent dividend but seems to have little growth potential, and a mutual fund that has excessive costs that I had overlooked. I put the money in a low-cost S&P 500 index fund that already made up a significant part of my portfolio.I agree with other reviewers who have criticized the book as repetitive, but it's worth reading for its style, wit, and clarity.

OK, this book is long. But so is the history of the Middle East. This book provides clear, insightful perspective into a very complex region that commands a certain understanding given its impact on the modern life. I highly recommend this book; I'm reading it for the second time and will probably read it a third as well. It's that detailed, and like any comprehensive historical treatment it's in the re-reads that you begin to piece together the key events that this book does such a great job of placing into a modern context.

A more-than-thorough history (500+ pages) of the Arab people from the defeat of the Mamluks by the Ottomans in 1516 until the present day. Eugene Rogan is an excellent writer, and despite its length, the book is not stuffy, boring or hard to read. Especially when you get to the modern era, which dominates the latter half of the book, Rogan is amazingly evenhanded and non-judgemental -- this is particularly impressive when you consider he is dealing with topics like the Arab-Israeli conflict and Palestinian rights and religious/sectarian conflicts in Lebanon and Syria. The book certainly added to my understanding of the current conflicts in the Middle East and how intractable the situation is.I have one major complaint: the book needs an easily referred to, serious timeline. Because the book generally covers topics in a regional manner, it is hard to relate what is happening in Egypt, say, at the time of Sadat's assassination, with what is going on in Lebanon (civil war) or the Iraq-Iran war. A good timeline would increase my rating to 5-stars.And as much as I liked this book and learned a lot, I have to say, I liked his other book, The Fall of the Ottomans, even more.

The author seems to be confused between the 'Arabs' and the 'Arabized' peoples of Greater Syria, Iraq and Egypt which this book is mostly about. The author himself points to events where the inhabitants of these regions could not wait to rid themselves of the last repressive Arab ruler when they openly collaborated with and helped the Ottoman Turks defeat the last of the so called Arab rulers "The Mamluks".The beginning of the book is excellent but as you get closer to the middle the book becomes totally disjointed and the materials presented become irrelevant to the main thesis of the book. In short this book is not about the Arabs, it is about the Arabized peoples of the Middle East whom many historians inadvertently insult their rich history, culture and contribution to humanity by referring to them as Arabs.

First the bad: it should be titled “The Arabs: From Ottoman rule to the 21st Century”, beacause that’s where it starts. Nothing about the origins of the ethnicity, the rise of Islam or the Arab conquest and subsequent empire. Also, it more or less downplays the defects of Arab societies and governments. It seemed to me that the author was assuming that readers were well aware of the faults of Arab culture through history, and he was endeavoring, though not fanatically so, to show a Western reader the flip side.That said, to me it was a worthwhile read. Informative without being overwhelmingly so, well written in a flowing style, not in the dry, technical language of the professional historian.

Very thorough and informative. A bit confusing with all the names. Could have used a glossary of names at beginning of chapters and maybe timelines ad well to keep what was happening in various countries at same time.

A thorough and decently readable history of the Arab culture. I would call this a "modern" history as it starts in what most would consider modern history, however that was all OK with me. The last third of the book is heavily based around the Arab/Israeli conflict, perhaps rightly, but that should be known to prospective readers. Given the difficulty of summarizing modern Arab history in less than 600 pages, it is not surprising that certain parts of the Arab world will be given less of a focus, but I was surprised with the lack of pretty much any ink devoted to the Arabian peninsula other than Saudi Arabia. Overall, a very in depth and necessary read.

I didn't get this book at all! Unfortunately, among all the books with the same name, it was the only one which could be delivered to Russia... As a result - I don't have this book... :-( It is very pity!

THE LAST KINGS OF THULE A Year Among the Eskimos of GreenlandThis book was purchased for a young man whose heritage comes from these peoples. It was purchased from Powells of Chicago, was in excellent condition, arrived in a timely fashion, and was all that was expected. Excellent book.

Well I knew I was on a Nuclear Airbase and I remember the smell in the air when the escomos came to the base to get things. I never knew they lived that bad. On Dundus mountain was the King barried I was told but even in the book it stated nothing about that except the two clains killed each other over an argument. Also the weather was correct since I was in a phase which the temperature was -66 F below and the winds were 165 mph. It took down the the 160 foot transmitting tower and pushed a truck and a F102A out into the bay. Also we had a chopper crash into the bay when taking a Escomo to the hospital and all died due to the cold water. This was in 1959. So I can say that was good reading and I survied with a 20 degree lean and was entered into the blue nosed club and had a 10 foot stare when I got back to the States for a while and my hair shedded for a while as well. Capt USAF retired.

Although the primary objectives of Malaurie's work were cartographic and geological in nature, he became, by default, a primary voice in describing the Thule culture by recounting his personal experiences and lifestyle during the expedition. Surely, ethnography can never be a truly objective effort, but Malaurie seems to appreciate this and relates cultural information through an admitted cultural filter. Rather than stifle his own reactions in his writing, Malaurie has adequately described, with sensitivity, his personal paradigm shift as well as that of the culture he is inevitably impacting by his very presence. It is inevitable that in any ethnographic description it will be found that something is amiss, lacking, due to the inevitable loss of information that occurs whenever information is transferred across cultural and linguistic lines. This work is one of the few that I have read that treats cultural interaction and exchange with dignity on behalf of the observed and the one observing. And, after all, these lines of distinction regarding observer and the observed shift and change radically during such a period of cultural interaction. Malaurie wonderfully describes this process.
