#34,747 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

It all started a few months ago. A pastor friend of mine told me about someone in his congregation who believes the earth is flat. Then he sent me a link to a video by Rob Skiva defending his view by quoting Dr. Michael Heiser. I looked Michael Heiser up and realized that he worked for Logos Bible Software. So I started reading some of his stuff. And I was intrigued. Now, to be clear, Heiser doesn't believe the earth is flat but he does believe that the ancient Israelites believed the earth was flat. But that wasn't the intriguing part. The intriguing part was what he said about angels, demons, and the supernatural world in general. He explained passages of scripture that I'd heard explained away all my life. And he did it in a way that was biblical and consistent. He also opened my eyes to the fact that there are verses and even whole chapters of Scripture that have been misunderstood - and dare I say it, mistranslated - for generations (I'm looking at you, Psalm 82).And though I had disagreements with Heiser's interpretations here and there, I've come to believe that he's largely on the right track. Too many Christians have downplayed and explained away the really difficult passages in Scripture to make them more palatable. We've removed all of the supernatural elements that aren't absolutely necessary. And that is unacceptable if we're going to be faithful to God's revelation. In The Unseen Realm, Heiser upends nearly all of the traditional ideas about the supernatural world. In Heiser's understanding of scripture, God has a council of lesser divine beings that rule alongside of him. At first glance you may think, 'That's crazy! And certainly not in the Bible!' but I'd encourage you to read The Unseen Realm for yourself. Heiser isn't pulling stuff out of thin air or arbitrarily making arguments. Everything he claims is backed up by scripture. And once you see it, it's hard to unsee it.It requires a paradigm shift; but once your paradigm is shifted, everything falls into place. Even passages that always seemed like they'd never fit anywhere (I'm looking at you, 1 Cor 11:11-15).And though I still want to do a proper review of The Unseen Realm, I got Heiser's new book Reversing Hermon yesterday and figured I'd go ahead and write about it since it's fresh on my mind.Reversing Hermon: Enoch, the Watchers & the Forgotten Mission of Jesus Christ is a book that deals extensively (and not surprisingly) with 1 Enoch. In case you're unaware, 1 Enoch is a book written a couple of centuries before Jesus was born that was quite popular among many Jews of Jesus' day and is quoted in Jude 14-15. It's part of a collections of writings known today as Pseudepigrapha. Several early church fathers considered it canonical and the Ethiopian Orthodox church included it in their Bibles. In short, it's a collection of stories, sayings, parables, and apocalypses that were supposedly recorded by Enoch, Noah's great-grandfather. Though no serious scholar believes Enoch actually wrote these things - Heiser included - there's no doubt that it gives valuable background to the way Jews of Jesus' day understood things. The quotation in Jude - as well as allusions elsewhere in the New Testament - testify to this fact. None of this means that 1 Enoch is scripture or that it should be included in our Bibles. But it does mean that 1 Enoch might shed some light on the worldview of the New Testament authors.Heiser's main argument in the book can be boiled down to this: the Pseudepigrapha in general, and 1 Enoch in particular, serve as a valuable backdrop to the New Testament world and writings. He isn't saying that scripture isn't sufficient for salvation. Neither is he arguing - like some kind of modern gnostic - that if we're going to be really spiritual, then we'll have to consult certain 'hidden' writings. He's simply pointing out the fact that if we're going to understand the New Testament properly, we need to understand the culture in which it was written. This should be pretty basic stuff. So, how does using 1 Enoch as a backdrop for the New Testament affect our understanding? To answer that question, I probably ought to summarize the most important parts (for our purposes) of the book.1 Enoch retells the story of Genesis 6:1-4. This is a passage of scripture that has puzzled interpreters for generations and which has been understood in a variety of rather creative ways. Here it is in its entirety:Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.Heiser briefly examines the ways this passage has been understood throughout Christian history and then begins laying a foundation for his own view by referencing 2 Peter 2:1-10 and Jude 5-7. And this leads to his discussion of 1 Enoch.1 Enoch's account of Genesis 6:1-4 isn't vague at all. It's incredibly descriptive. And it's also hard for most modern people to swallow.According to Enoch, this story is about supernatural beings - Watchers - who leave their proper abode and bring secret knowledge to humankind. They also have sexual relations with human women. The offspring of these unions are giants known as Nephilim (among other names). God punishes the Watchers by sealing them away in Tartarus (see 2 Peter 2:4). When the Nephilim - giants - died, their spirits were released and became what we would call demons. This is the basic story of Genesis 6:1-4 as 1 Enoch understands it. And for most people today, it understandably raises a lot of questions. And I'm among those people. There are a lot of things about this description that seem strange to me. And yet, most of my objections are logical, cultural, or emotional...not scriptural.I'm not going to lie. This whole thing makes me uncomfortable. But the explanation of the text makes far more sense than any other explanation I've heard. In other words, if this wasn't the Bible - if someone handed me a storybook and it had Genesis 6:1-4 in it, I'd probably understand it the same way 1 Enoch does. What makes me feel uncomfortable with this explanation is not that it doesn't match the text. It's that I have a hard time wrapping my mind around the possibility that it could be true. And yet, I believe Jesus was born of a virgin. I believe he performed miracles. I believe he was raised from the dead.Yes. I feel myself succumbing to the same temptation almost all Christians do. Let's sweep all of the unnecessary supernatural elements of scripture under the rug and only display the ones that are acceptable to most people - and absolutely necessary to the faith.Heiser spends the first part of Reversing Hermon describing the connections between Genesis 6, 1 Enoch, and the Mesopotamian versions of the same story. He lays an important foundation in these chapters for understanding the rest of the book - especially for those who are unacquainted with the story told in 1 Enoch. Everything he mentions here will come up in later chapters - sometimes in unexpected ways.I ought to note two important things at this point. First, Heiser isn't pulling stuff out of thin air. Everything he writes is based on scripture and backed up by solid scholarship. The notes at the end of the book are evidence of that, taking up nearly 60 pages. Second, Heiser isn't the first person who has said this stuff. Many of the earliest church fathers claimed the exact same things Heiser claims. And he's not afraid to note that fact. Irenaeus is mentioned frequently, with good reason. He's well-respected, he wrote early, and he taught along similar lines to Heiser regarding 1 Enoch's understanding of Genesis 6.In Part two, Heiser discusses how 1 Enoch's version of events underlies some of the sayings and events of Jesus' life.Let me just say that chapter 4 is phenomenal. In it, he argues that Revelation 12 is a piece of astral prophecy (in this chapter, he draws heavily from Malina's commentary on Revelation. I read it last year and, like Heiser, found it to be a stretch at times but it did include some fascinating insights). If read this way, Revelation 12 is giving us the birthday of Jesus. This may sound outlandish or crazy but again, I'd encourage you to read what he writes before you pass judgment. It left me with my mouth hanging open.Chapter 5 is a little less monumental. It relies heavily on the scholarly work of Amy Richter to argue that the women included in Jesus' genealogy are there because they are all connected to the sins of the Watchers (see Matthew 1:1-17). I found this chapter less convincing than most of the rest of the book but it's worth reading and considering. And it's also worth noting that I haven't heard any better explanations for why those particular women are mentioned and none others.Chapter 6 focuses on Jesus' ministry and, in particular, the events of Jesus' life that take place near Mount Hermon/Bashan/Caesarea Philippi. This chapter is the reason the book received the subtitle it did. It's really the only chapter in the book that discusses - at any length - the "forgotten mission of Jesus Christ." And what is that forgotten mission, you ask? "When Jesus chose to go to Mount Hermon to be transfigured, He was claiming it for the Kingdom of God." According to Heiser's reading, Jesus was reversing the damage done by the Watchers when they came to the same mountain and made a pact to sin against God together. In the third part, Heiser hones in on three problematic passages/ideas in the New Testament epistles and explains how having the Enochic background helps understand what's going on there. First, he deals with the issue of human sinfulness. He argues that for first century Jews, the ubiquity of human sinfulness is not only owing to Adam's sin but also to the Watchers' sin in Genesis 6:1-4. Then, he discusses Paul's exhortation regarding women and head-coverings in 1 Corinthians 11. This chapter is important because it makes sense of an otherwise incredibly confusing passage. Finally, he discusses Peter's summary of baptism in 1 Peter 3:18-22. In my opinion, this section of the book is the strongest and best argued. It makes sense of verses that I've seen fumbled and mishandled all of my life. To put it bluntly, it just makes more sense of what the text says. The final part of Reversing Hermon focuses on the book of Revelation. In particular, he addresses the issue of the Antichrist, the identification of Gog, and the origins of the lake of fire. My views on Revelation are different from Heiser's so I found myself disagreeing the most in these chapters - though even here, there's much to glean. I especially appreciated the discussion on Gog.After the meat of the book is over, you get five appendices for dessert. Though these range in value. First up is a good - albeit short - summary of the early church's views on 1 Enoch. Second, there's a quick summary of the dating/manuscript evidence for the book. Third is a list of scholarly works on 1 Enoch. Fifth is a quick essay that I didn't particularly care for entitled The Ancient Antichrist Profile: Jew or Gentile? And fourth (yes, I know I didn't order those correctly), he includes a list of allusions to the Pseudepigrapha. This was - in my opinion - something of a mixed bag.Heiser opens this appendix by noting that "what constitutes an allusion varies in the opinions of scholars." It's obvious from this statement that Heiser recognizes the tenuous nature of some of the connections made in this list. For example, Luke 21:18 is said to be a possible allusion to 1 Enoch 51:2. But look at them:1 Enoch 51:2 - "And he shall choose the righteous and the holy ones from among the risen dead, for the day when they shall be selected and saved has arrived."Luke 21:28 - "Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."Personally, I don't see even a slight allusion here. Naturally, when you have two people talking about similar things, there may be a little overlap but it seems to me that many of the allusions included in this list are a stretch. Likewise, some may not be an example of New Testament authors alluding to the Pseudepigrapha but rather of both the NT authors and the Pseudepigrapha alluding to the Old Testament (1 Enoch 5:7 and Matthew 5:5 could both be alluding to Psalm 37:11). With that said, the New Testament definitely includes some genuine allusions to the Pseudepigrapha that are worth noting. These allusions take up a huge amount of space too. The list is a full 54 pages (out of a 326 page book). What else can I say? Heiser will challenge everything you think you know about the way the world works. His is a call to stretch ourselves beyond what we're used to. It's paradigm shifting at its finest. This was true of The Unseen Realm and it's true of Reversing Hermon. And though I can't say that I'm fully onboard with everything Heiser argues, I do believe that he takes the text of scripture - especially the 'problematic' verses - more seriously than just about anyone I've read. And even if he doesn't change your mind, he will challenge you to think through your own interpretations and beliefs. And that's always a good thing.May we seek to be ever more faithful to the text of scripture - and thus, to its Author.

So you tell me what is going on in this 21st century world!I have read all of Dr Heiser's books (fiction / non-fiction / Kindle books / web posts, etc) and I listen to his podcasts.I can say he is definitely "about the text" and what I appreciate greatly is his reverence with the text ...I think it is of great importance in this time we live in light of the cavalier manner in which so many fling out their thoughts, words, books, sermons, blog posts etc. without really thinking through the consequences of causing a little one, who is sincerely trying to follow Jesus in our post-Christian era, to stumble. As he points out in this new book, it is not a sequel to The Unseen Realm which was my mistaken first impression. I would describe this new book as a fleshing out of important concepts he wrote about in The Unseen Realm with special concentration on divine council theology and it's implications in New Testament doctrines, teachings and context. The style is non-argumentative and non-technical. He is not trying to grind some theological ax, but endeavoring to further our understanding of the text that should be the source authority for those who claim to be disciples of Jesus. The footnotes are great and are located at the end of the book. ...read the footnotes...he is not making this stuff up ;-)I highly recommend it, but only should you desire to think through it's implications! ...and having posted my first thoughts, I now have the delightful task of beginning my second "slow" reading of this new work.

This is a response to a fellow reviewer who believes that Dr. Heiser should have written more original material in this book and quoted less. I understand this point of view, and generally I would agree with it, but not in this case. These citations demonstrate that Dr. Heiser isn't a theological lone wolf -- a number of people who have spent their professional lives reading what the authors of the Bible read (in their original languages) have come to the same conclusion: parts of the Bible contain context, ideas, and theology which are preserved in 1 Enoch. You'll need to read the book to unpack what follows.Dr. Heiser could have rewritten these citations and taken more of the credit for himself. Instead, he stepped aside and introduced us to new authors. As a fellow author, I see this as an act of generosity -- he may have helped some of these people to earn book contracts. And it shows that Dr. Heiser understands the book ought to promote the Bible rather than himself. In Dr. Heiser's field, any new idea must be suspect -- you must let experts "kick the tires" of a new idea to see if it's truly Biblical in nature. When authors abandon this practice, we get claims that Jesus was an alien or that the Earth is flat. Dr. Heiser's method uses peer-reviewed material (i.e., tires that have been thoroughly kicked) which gives us more reason to trust the authors' conclusions. To summarize, this book helps us lay-folk understand what Biblical language experts already know: that 1 Enoch is part of Biblical history (but without advocating that 1 Enoch ought to be part of the Bible). This research reinforces the need to read the Bible as a literal historical document, where our sense of literalness is informed by the worldview of its authors rather than by our own assumptions. (And this is is true of any book.)Also be sure to check YouTube for Dr. Heiser's presentation about "Reversing Hermon". If you have any concerns about the author, this video ought to lay them to rest.

Amazon.com Review

If you read this in high school (as many of us did), it may have shocked you--not bad for a tract written in 1729. It wouldn't be fair to those of you who haven't come across A Modest Proposal to reveal the particulars of the piece; suffice it to say that Saturday Night Live has nothing on Jonathan Swift! Swift's discussion of what Great Britain should do for his native impoverished Ireland is a model of political satire, absolutely consistent in tone and even now still sparkling in its clarity. The balance between, on the one hand, the utter seriousness of the matter in question and, on the other, the outrageousness of the remedy suggested is exquisite. A Modest Proposal is short and comes bound in this edition with several of Swift's other writings. This volume is an excellent introduction to the author of Gulliver's Travels (itself a masterwork) and to one of the world's premier satirical minds. What are you waiting for? --Michael Gerber

Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal" is considered one of the greatest satirical works in the English language. Having recently taught this essay to two different groups of students, I can fully appreciate its varied approach to satire (Swift employs many devices, including irony, mock-heroic, and bathos). It's a quick read, but an essential one. This essay was written about the plight of the poor Irish trying to survive under the oppression of 18th Century England, an arrangement where England offered its protection, but in return seized their lands and dried up their resources. Still, Swift's jest points out a flaw that still exists today: the tendency for those who are comfortable to treat the poor like vermin or cattle instead of people.

What can I contribute to what has already been said about Jonathan Swift? A Modest Proposal exposed the harm and horror of the Irish famine - serving up epicurean delights to the rich while serving the modest interests of the poor. If you haven't read this long-ago written work, you are missing the depth of literary art taking on a challenge which ultimately helped produce a national conscience.

A great description of reality.

Most of us, including myself, read "A Modest Proposal" in high school. I decided to purchase a copy of the book, so I could read it again. It's quite an interesting and funny book. I can't even imagine how people of that era took the writing after it was published.

This is a quick read and yet one of the greatest classics of all time. Pick up a copy and read it again or have your kids read it to understand one of the greatest writers of all time.

Everyone has heard of A Modest Proposal. This made it very surprising when I found that the Battle of the Books by Swift is actually much better (it is included in this text). I good, small piece of literature. Worth buying.

Thank you!

But it's not a big book. Rather small actually. It's humor is good, but the language is of that time period. Don't expect modern phrases.

#3,878 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

John Ellsworth doesn’t fool around. In Paragraph 3 of Chapter One, Ermaline Ransom is stripping to the waist in Thaddeus Murfee’s tiny law office. Thad is transfixed, not only by the full-frontal view of Ermaline, but by the word “Victor” carved, and inked, across her breasts. “Victor” is Victor Harrow, a local building contractor and political power in the little town of Orbit, Illinois, downstate from Chicago. Thought by the town to be very wealthy, he is in fact mortgaged to the hilt, so much so that he has fallen behind in his payments to the Mob. This is their retaliation, with further punishments to come if he doesn’t pay up, at once. They think Ermaline is his lover but she is really just an innocent caught in the middle.Shortly afterward, Victor is found shot dead, and Ermaline, though liked and trusted in the town, has after all a towering motive. She is arrested and jailed, and asks Thad to defend her. The rest of the narrative deals with all the legal maneuvers associated with courtroom drama, but is enlivened by the fact that Thad barely knows what he is doing, being only a few months out of law school. As a result, he needs a lot of help, much of which comes from Christine, his secretary. She is an Iraq war veteran, with considerable dark-side judicial experience she can’t discuss. Further, when Thad agrees to defend Ermaline, he becomes a threat to the Mob, and justifiably goes in fear of his life. The book is a good introduction to what became a successful series. Mr. Ellsworth is an experienced writer, so the words go down smoothly. Read it; you’ll like it.

After finishing the first book in this series (Thaddeus Murfee A Young Lawyer) I simply had to continue to read about his further exploits in the second star to the right.Thaddeus is struggling in his new home of Orbit, IL. All the lawyers there are, because the uptick from The Great Recession has not yet hit this very small town in a very small county in Illinois.Thaddeus, however, has made trustworthy friends. And when a well-known and liked young woman suffers a horrible injury, one of those good friends sends her to Thaddeus. And the book is off to the races. His experience as an Assistant United States District Attorney (see book one) stands him in no better shape than any other wet behind the ears lawyer.Thaddeus does have one secret weapon - his paralegal, Christine. She had served in the United States Army. Two tours in Iraq, one in Germany. The first two as an MP, the third and last as a paralegal - trained by her time in the JAG Corps.Between the two of them, this is an exciting legal thriller, shaking up lives across the the state. There's even a FISA Warrant involved, which is incredibly interesting in today's political environment. This is another unputdownable book by Mr. Ellsworth. The characters are fully shaped, without a single extra word, the narrative is taut and exciting. There nothing superfluous, but time is given for Thaddeus to have a life outside of the practice of law.Enjoyable to the last word. One side note: the joke herein has the incorrect punchline. "Your Honor."

First, let me say that as an author, one of my greatest beliefs is that good character development should be the foundation of any story writing. It is not easy to write a book; it takes really hard work and constant vigilance. I applaud anyone who is published. The main character in The Defendants is Thaddeus, a newly graduated legislator by about 18 months. While he may be a rookie to his profession, in this story through lack of creativity and energy, he allows everyone else figure out how to solve the problems for his client. He lacked ingenuity, perseverance and creative investigation. He did however whine a lot about what he DIDN'T know, and his inability to take even the next step in her defense. Even his paralegal applied more effort than her boss Thaddeus. He did not save his client, his paralegal did. Makes you wonder just who took the bar exam, here. Secondly, there were far too many word errors in this book. This should not happen, since technology and good editing would have caught all of them. It's like reading narrative written at a grade school level.

Thaddeus Murfee, although not well known as a lawyer, takes a chance on defending Ermeline Randsom in the case of the murder of Victor Harrow. After she was defiled by Victor Harrow in his office/business after being drugged. All she wanted to do was sue Victor Harrow for damages. However, it would go well beyond that, it would go all the way to being a pasty for the mob and the Attorney General. What a great story. I loved it. It was very well written and has great characters. I can't wait to read the prequel. Five stars from me.

Small town waitress, Ermaline Ransom, goes to Victor Harris's temporary office in a purple bus for a drink. While there mobster, Johnny Bladanni, shoes up and drugs her and Victor then carves VIC on one breast and TOR on the other one. All to get Victor to pay his bribe money for the last six months, $100,000! When Victor could only come up with $25,000, Johnny goes back to the Governor with it and is told to get Victor's tax and bank records to see if there was anything with any equity. When the Governor discovers that Victor has liens on everything he owns, he tells Johnny to make an example of him. The Governor also tells him to set Ermaline up to take the fall. Johnny gets in touch with Ermaline's ex-husband, Hector, to help with the job by planting the murder weapons in her home. He links Ermaline to the murder by carving ERM on Victor's forehead. Can Thaddeus Murfee, her young and inexperienced lawyer help to set her free? Many good friends help him along the way but it takes one big mouth to accomplish the seemingly impossible!

"One of Amazon.com's 2013 Best Science Books""One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2013""Honorable Mention for the 2013 PROSE Award in Popular Science & Mathematics, Association of American Publishers""As Fortnow describes. . . P versus NP is 'one of the great open problems in all of mathematics' not only because it is extremely difficult to solve but because it has such obvious practical applications. It is the dream of total ease, of the confidence that there is an efficient way to calculate nearly everything, 'from cures to deadly diseases to the nature of the universe,' even 'an algorithmic process to recognize greatness.'. . . To postulate that P ≠NP, as Fortnow does, is to allow for a world of mystery, difficulty, and frustration--but also of discovery and inquiry, of pleasures pleasingly delayed."---Alexander Nazaryan, New Yorker"Fortnow effectively initiates readers into the seductive mystery and importance of P and NP problems." (Publishers Weekly)"Fortnow's book is just the ticket for bringing one of the major theoretical problems of our time to the level of the average citizen--and yes, that includes elected officials."---Veit Elser, Science"Without bringing formulas or computer code into the narrative, Fortnow sketches the history of this class of questions, convincingly demonstrates their surprising equivalence, and reveals some of the most far-reaching implications that a proof of P = NP would bring about. These might include tremendous advances in biotechnology (for instance, more cures for cancer), information technology, and even the arts. Verdict: Through story and analogy, this relatively slim volume manages to provide a thorough, accessible explanation of a deep mathematical question and its myriad consequences. An engaging, informative read for a broad audience."---J.J.S. Boyce, Library Journal"A provocative reminder of the real-world consequences of a theoretical enigma." (Booklist)"The definition of this problem is tricky and technical, but in The Golden Ticket, Lance Fortnow cleverly sidesteps the issue with a boiled-down version. P is the collection of problems we can solve quickly, NP is the collection of problems we would like to solve. If P = NP, computers can answer all the questions we pose and our world is changed forever. It is an oversimplification, but Fortnow, a computer scientist at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, knows his stuff and aptly illustrates why NP problems are so important."---Jacob Aron, New Scientist"Fortnow's book does a fine job of showing why the tantalizing question is an important one, with implications far beyond just computer science."---Rob Hardy, Commercial Dispatch

From the Back Cover

"You will love this book. It's completely accessible and captures the thrill, potential, and heartbreak of an edgy mathematical problem in terms that nonmathematicians will appreciate. After readingThe Golden Ticket, I sort of hope P isn't NP after all."--Vint Cerf, Internet Pioneer"The P-NP problem is fundamental to computer science, and indeed all of mathematics. This book presents an engaging exposition of the problem, its history, and importance. In the process, it touches on major topics appearing in university computer science courses, all presented in an amusing style requiring no background in mathematics beyond the ability to solve Sudoku puzzles. I highly recommend it."--Stephen Cook, formulator of the P-NP problem"This book, written by a world-class master of the field, is a grand tour of the most celebrated and profound unsolved problem in computer science. Fortnow's many ingenious explanations make the mysteries of computational complexity accessible to anyone interested in the fundamental questions: what can be computed and how fast can we compute it?"--John MacCormick, author of Nine Algorithms That Changed the Future"This book is meticulous. Fortnow has really tracked down the history and background of this important and timely subject. Even complexity theorists will benefit from his fine scholarship. The Golden Ticket is the first of its kind--a book for general readers about complexity theory."--William Gasarch, University of Maryland"Nobody explains the importance of the P-NP problem better than Fortnow."--William J. Having personally neglected computational theory for almost two decades since completing my doctorate in computer science, this read was a blast - not only reminding me of the main themes of the topic, but seeing a bigger perspective around it than I'd ever previously been taught - plus a lot of new aspects have developed over those years (e.g., I still thought of P/NP as being about deterministic versus non-deterministic, rather than today's more common vantage: recognizing versus finding a solution to a problem instance). The footnote on page 111 is my favorite footnote ever.Given my background, I wouldn't mind (for the Second Edition?) a 2- or 3-page appendix with a Wikipedia type of entry about the technical details, so I could remind myself and ruminate more deeply without interrupting my transcendental state by running back to an actual computer screen, but that is hardly a criticism of the book, given its purpose. My work is in machine learning (aka, predictive analytics), and the author touches upon how P/NP relates to my field; tantalizing food for thought. Machine learning is not just optimization, though; beyond optimizing over a training data set, you need to ensure it then continues to perform well over data not used to optimize it. Hmm, how does this play out if P=NP?Eric Siegel, Ph.D.Founder, Predictive Analytics WorldAuthor, Predictive Analytics: The Power to Predict Who Will Click, Buy, Lie, or Die

Everything is doing some computations. Everything in the whole universe. The computational flavours range from Math and Physics to Biology and Economics; bounded by our current science. Some computations are feasible within human timeframe (P - polynomial), some are not (NP-complete - non polynomial). For example, you can easily start a computation at home that will outlive yourself. What a messy universe! (Even light travels so slow here) The golden ticket to “paradise” is to proof that hard problems (NP) can be reduced to possible problems (P), then P = NP. Lance explores this magnificent challenge using several entertaning analogies (e.g., finding one ticket within many many chocolate bars). To conclude that, maybe, even ask if P=NP is completely nonsense but it is pushing us forward. Some of us are adventurous enough to try impossible things and civilization has been accumulating their results .

Lance Fortnow's new book is an inspiring, accessible, and imaginative overview of P versus NP that everyone can read and appreciate, which until now has been conspicuously missing from the literature. Within the "folklore" of complexity theory, people have long uttered intuitive phrases to motivate P versus NP in passing, such as "P versus NP is asking whether creativity can be automated by computers." Fortnow takes these intuitions and expands them, like no one else has before: really imagining a world where P = NP, exploring the magic of computing in that world, and arguing why that world is unlikely to exist. He also discusses a historical account of the problem's origins in both the East and West, how people cope with P versus NP in practice, some past attempts at resolving P versus NP, the applications to cryptography, and the relevance of quantum computing. All this in less than 200 pages! There is an intellectual cost to the immediate accessibility of this book: for example, P and NP are never really formally defined. If you would like to *work* on P versus NP, or (less ambitiously) are looking for a technical overview of the problem, there are many available books to recommend such as Scott Aaronson's new Quantum Computing since Democritus or Sipser's classic textbook Introduction to the Theory of Computation. However, if you're just looking for a high-level explanation of why P versus NP is so important, Fortnow's book is a great place to start.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a light enough read to finish in one sitting on a weeknight within a few hours, but also showed its importance by being able to connect the dots between the P = NP problem to issues in health care, economics, security, scheduling and a number of other problems. And instead of talking in a "professor-like" tone, the author creates illustrative examples in Chapters 2 and 3 that are easy to grasp. These examples form the basis for much of the problems addressed in the book. This is a book that needed to be written and needs to be on everyone's bookshelf, particularly for those asking questions like "what is mathematics" or "what is mathematics used for". This book answers those questions, and towards the end gives examples (in plain English) of the different branches of mathematics and theoretical computer science, without making it read like a text book.

The book contains no algorithms. It covers the history of complexity theory and speculates about a science fictionesque future in which cancer would be cured if only we could solve one NP-complete problem, but the author doubts it will happen. It reads like the script of a Discovery Channel program.

Worth reading for the clarification that Shor's factoring algorithm is not in fact an example of quantum computers solving an NP complete problem, a misconception I had going into the book. Reads like a magazine article.

I'm giving this 5 stars because:1.It was interesting enough to read straight through.2.I thought the author did a nice job balancing making it technical enough, but not too much, for the intended audience, an intelligent reader interested in the subject, but not wanting to be overwhelmed with technical items.3.It cost less that $10.00 (Kindle).

I especially liked the fact that the author explained the topic well, while resisting the temptation to create a giant book full of repetitious examples. I didn't fully understand some of the analogies but still feel like I have a better understanding of what the P vs. NP problem is - and why it matters to all of us.

Bought this to read with my 9 year old. I am an avid reader and have studied literature, but this prose is occasionally difficult to get through. I couldn't imagine him being able to read it himself, and he is pretty good. It is just about perfect for my use - we unschool, so as we get to terms, phrases, ideas, and historical info that isn't familiar, we delve into impromptu 'lessons' about the Crusades, Medieval times, caste systems, religion and politics' dance through history, and so on. I love the spattering of the original old English poetry and stories at the beginning of the chapters, and the sourcing is great. It is interesting and lively, fun to read, and spurs all sorts of creative activities, sparring, and other lessons. A great book for igniting creativity and building research skills off of. Depending on your child's ability to grasp words and ideas in loose context and reading level, might be good for older kids, definitely for teens, and great for adults.

Four hundred year old adventure stories thrilling as ever! My 9-yr old daughters and I enjoyed every page "because it was so exciting"! Our favorite part was when Maid Marian and the beautiful Bettris kicked major butt, with bows and arrows and a frypan, unaided by anybody all on their own.

Very happy with the layout of this book and the drawings every few pages. I was happy to purchase the unabridged version with pictures!! My eleven year old son had a very enjoyable read, and shared this book with friends.

Excellent read, well written, very funny version, I've read a few, and no mention of bad King John, definitely the bad sheriff of Nottingham, and three excellent archers by play on names of famous people Ingle noted for her time. I recommend this book. Great read for children as well. Short to read for adult. Longer read for children depending on reading skills.

This electronic version of the Puffin classic worked great for me to follow along with a class. Page numbering is exactly the same. And of course, the stories are wonderful. A unique aspect of this book is that each chapter can stand alone for class readings if you don't want to use the whole thing in a unit on the Medieval times and culture.

I bought this book to read with my 7 year old, and I am pretty well pleased with it. The vocabulary is simple, the sentences are short (and often start with the word "and"; my grade school teachers would be appalled), but the tale is told effectively and accessibly for young readers. Also, unlike some other books for young readers (e.g. the Droon series), this book does not simplify to the point of eliminating all of the descriptive passages. When Robin disguises himself as a musician, he wears "feathers of many colors" and carries a harp. There's not enough description to interfere with the pace for impatient children, but there is enough detail to hang your imagination off of.As for the story, there were some frustrating omissions. The origin of Robin Hood is given only a few paragraphs in the introduction, and the tales of how Will Scarlet and Friar Tuck joined the band are missing. The book only tells how Little John joined. The rest just sort of show up later in the story. I'm sure that was done to keep the pace of the story moving, but it would have been good to have more of the stories written in this same style. The rest of the story is a reasonably solid narration of the traditional tale of Robin Hood, with no more than the usual level of variation. I definitely recommend this book as a good way to introduce children to the story of Robin Hood, though I like the Dover Children's Thrift Classics edition slightly better.

A wonderful classic and a pretty book to display on the shelf. My kids, 7 and 11, really enjoyed us reading this as a family.

While the story is fun and exciting, the sentence structure in the book is very disappointing. I recognize that it may be the author's style to add emphasis to ideas by writing them as stand-alone sentences, even if they are fragments. However, the children who are reading this book are usually also just learning how to write a good sentence; so the basic rule that a sentence should be a complete thought is more important in books for early readers than in books written for older audiences.I was also frustrated because it would have been so easy for the author to write her thoughts in complete sentences. Many fragments could easily have been written as the second half of a compound sentence. Some examples from page 6:"The lad agreed. And he beat the man. Fair and square.""But the man was angry. And embarrassed.""Like most outlaws, he stole. But only from the rich."
