Review

“The field of endocrinology, as this compelling history shows, has manifested extremes of ingenuity and hubristic error.” - The New Yorker“A well-written and informative book on the history of hormone research.” - New York Times Book Review“Hormones may be the ringmasters of the bodily circus, controlling everything from sex to metabolic function, but in this invigorating history they become the stars of the show.” - Nature“An invaluable guide... [Epstein] cleverly moves back and forth through time, avoiding any hint of dry recitation.” - Science News“A sweeping, glorious story of hormones, threaded through with sex, suffering, neurology, biology, medicine and self-discovery, Randi Hutter Epstein’s book manages to excite the imagination as well as calm it. The story is grippingly told, and Epstein manages to bring a whole system of science alive to her reading public.” - Siddhartha Mukherjee, author of The Gene: An Intimate History“Hormones today can seem a bit like angels and demons in earlier times: invisible agents mysteriously responsible for everything in our lives. In her funny, eye-opening book, Randi Hutter Epstein demystifies these molecules, while taking away none of their amazing power.” - Carl Zimmer, author of She Has Her Mother's Laugh and Parasite Rex“Hunger. Lust. Maternal love. It’s hard to believe our biggest human dramas are written by tiny molecules discovered only a century ago. Randi Hutter Epstein spins a fine medical history of the hormones coursing through our blood, the hucksters who hawk them, and scientific visionaries who changed the way we think about who we are.” - Florence Williams, author of The Nature Fix“Lucid and entertaining... [Epstein's] beguiling prose makes for a lively and accessible introduction to hormones and the important work they do in the lives of humans.” - Publishers Weekly“An engaging book of medical history that teaches readers about important aspects of physiology.” - Library Journal

Randi Epstein has written a fun, fast-paced medical detective story about the discovery of hormones and what they do in the body. We learn how these chemical signals regulate growth, weight, gender and sexuality, even the bonding of mother and infant. We learn what happens when there is too much of them – think of the fat lady and giant that were once paraded around at the Circus – or too little – the salt craving and exhaustion of Addison’s Disease that afflicted John F Kennedy.Epstein, a doctor with a dual degree in journalism, also delves into the many controversies that have taken place over the years -- Can hormones incite violence? Can they be used to stay young? Should women take them after menopause. But perhaps most intriguing in this fascinating story are the many different people that have played key roles along the way – the highly intelligent but arrogant neurosurgeon that studied the pituitary gland (Harvey Cushing), the determined female scientist who developed the groundbreaking technique used to measure hormones (Rosalyn Yallow), and the parents of a patient who circled the country to collect dead bodies so their son might have the hormone he needed to grow (Al and Barbara Baliban).I loved this book and highly recommend it.

This book is a wonderful and engaging ride through the history of hormones. Epstein elucidates while she educates us on a subject that is far more fascinating that most of us may realize. We are all a little curious about how hormones work and the role they play – growth hormones, sex hormones etc. The author takes that little bit of curiosity and pulls you into a well-researched and lucid chapter on each topic. You leave each chapter feeling so much more enlightened and educated. For example, the chapter looking at the relationship between gender, sexual orientation and hormones is a real eye-opener. Epstein has done all the work for you in terms of her in-depth research and her lucid and engaging writing style. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy the ride through the history of hormones. I highly recommend this book.

I liked the stories, but I was kinda looking for it to be broken down differently, more linearly, I guess. I woulda preferred a history of the major hormones from the first conception they existed through to more modern times, like I've seen in other histories of science. I felt she jumped into the middle of the history of certain hormones much of the time to get the better story and hook readers when I wanted the boring bits that got us to the middle. It is fun read with a lot of resources for further research. Just not what I was looking for

"I have to admit, when studying bio in college the aspect I hated most was memorizing all of the endless endocrine pathways. So many acronyms--so little relevance. Or so I thought; how wrong I was.Dr. Epstein's book is the one I wish I'd read in school and (perhaps the first time anyone has ever said this) also made for excellent beach reading. I came away with knowledge that will allow me to cast a more suspiciously curious eye over the hormone "industry". Which is in part Epstein's main point--endocrinology is partially an industry of supreme marketing, and it always has been.We are also brought up-to-date with the present-developing science in a way that one generally is not without reading a journal. Epstein's clarification of Leibel's work on hormones illuminates a raging debate within the literature: both scientific and popular. Also, how often does a book of non-fiction alert you to an Orson Welles film? Five stars for sure.

As someone with no training in molecular biology at all, I found this book a useful primer introducing me to hormones. It is easy to read and provides an interesting, well documented historical perspective on this science.

Funny, engaging and informative, I love Randi Hutter Epstein's intelligent style and the way she makes a narrative out of a something as simple as how hormones work in our body. A really good read!

Excellent book. Very easy to read and understand for the average person. Lots of interesting anecdotes. Interesting information, history of the discoveries. I recommend to anyone who wants to know more about how our bodies work or don't.

Hormones are the boss. Learn more about them in a very accessible way.

Though it's aimed toward giving Christians apologetics, being newer to Christianity, (just a couple years now), and having been raised hard core Mormon, then spending 12 years in the occult (new age/ metaphysics), a lot of the questions in this book are the ones I asked, myself.I came to Christ through a renewing of the mind, He reached in and changed me, (as I was studying the Bible originally for the curiosity, for the heck of it, to see what it says in there). But, as a thinker, I need intelligent support to satisfy a human need to make sense. I know that I know, but it's nice to have logic to what I know, too. You might not like every answer the book gives, but I suggest stepping back, and letting it sink in before totally rejecting it, and at least it got you to think about it- because it matters. To a Non-Christian- there IS logic to Christianity, and intense depth and mystery in the Bible. You don't have to be a blind believer, but you do need to read, and THINK. That part is on YOU. This book can guide you, start you on your way. There is evidence. There is logic. There is reasoning. This is for believers and non-believers. New-agers, Shamans, and Mormons.Like Ravi says, Leading Thinkers to Christ and Christians to Think. You must. It matters.♥

The book admits it could expand upon the topics to great lengths but space doesn't permit it.It does a great job addressing the questions even though at times seems a little brief which is ok.It's highly recommended if you like what you are reading and want more you can get books by the authors that go into more detail. It has great references and bibliography that one could/should take advantage of.

I was looking for Bro. Ravi's beautifully-written words and instead got several writers who each seemed to be trying to "out-philosophize" each other. AND a disclaimer: "We (including coeditor Norm Geisler) might not agree with everything in this book." Why put it in the book if you didn't agree with it? After wading through Geisler's "Who Made God," and skimming through the next couple of writers, I tried just flipping from title to title, and subheads in the titles, got bored and went on to read something else. You might like this book if you're into the minutiae of philosophical presumption, and I did read a few clear insights, such as (paraphrased) the trinity is like a triangle: it is one triangle that has three points.

Title is sorta deceiving......sounds a bit trivial, but it's actually interesting. We think we know the answer to that question....but think, how can something be made that has always existed, always loved and always had a Plan for our future. Our finite minds can't seem to grasp the term "always" (having no beginning and no end). Since God created "time" when he created Adam and Eve this read is thought provoking and very helpful for ministering to those you love and for us who just want a closer walk with the Lord. Enjoy!

This review by no means gives enough credit to the writers, editors and everyone involved in this master piece. I call it such because it is a piece that not only masters the topics/questions in it, but educates all of us to give correct answers without doubting our faith, like we often see. To my understanding, this book is essential in every Christian's home library. Thank you so much for giving me the tools to better defend my faith.

Best book on Apologetics that I have read in while. Every chapter got better and better. I see myself reading this again real soon. I have the Kindle version and audiobook.

Loved the book and found it very informative. Just a pity about the science section written by William Lane Craig who do not believe in Genesis as written and try to squeeze evolution and vast time periods into Genesis 1-2. God said what He meant and meant what He said. It is only chronological hubris that will have us believe that the Hebrews 3000 y ago could not possibly understand long ages and Moses then explained it in terms of days. That's just ridiculous. Rest of the book was very good though.

Excellent presentation of the question. I will admit that the physics and science discussed is over my head at times, but I can wrap my head around the question asked and the answer. Very good reading for folks who think science and faith are separate ideas that cannot come together.

#258,500 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Novak writes clearly, persuasively, with a generous spirit, exhorting believers and unbelievers to communicate better with each other, to respect each other, to learn from each other. The book was published in 2008, so gathering from the dust and drama to be viewed on the internet every day, precious few people have taken this wisdom to heart. He makes a very strong case for the humility that both "sides" should have, and generally comes across as fair and sincere. He manages to paint a very grim view of secularism / atheism / agnosticism and the limits and future possibilities of these worldviews. I am not convinced that he always states his opponent's position in its best possible version, but there is no apparent sense of malice or strawman building in evidence. If you believe, as I do, that the debate about faith and atheism / secularism is a very important one, one with far-reaching implications, this book will probably expand and enrich your views on some aspects of the debate, regardless of the "team" you play on. An important read, highly recommended.

I got the audio version and listened to it in my car while commuting back and forth to work. I had to really stay focused to listen. The author reminds me of a beloved, grandfather, who sometimes rambles. At times he is very enduring and thought provoking; at other times slightly boring... All in all, he has some great insight, and a good handle on history, which I find interesting. In places, I think an atheist may be offended, if they are not open to another point of view, but mostly, his dialog is well thought out and deep. He has lived in doubt and darkness, and survived. It is a LONG book, so if you take it on, be prepared to be patient. Once you get through the first few chapters, things pick up and become more interesting. My feeling is if I can walk away from a book and keep thinking about it's content, then it was worth the price. I did walk away thinking, and I did learn some things.

This is a fascinating book. It adopts a charitable, friendly tone in addressing the views and experiences of atheists from within the Judeo-Christian tradition. Novak sees a kind of common ground with atheists in the experience of nothingness (the dark night of the soul) experienced by Catholic mystics and articulated by those in the Carmelite tradition like St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, and St. Therese of Lisieux. This is a wise and thoughtful book, open and reflective in tone. It is a kind of summing up of the life experience and reflections of a lifetime--the author more than once mentions his age as of writing--74 years. What it is not: If you are looking for a polemic that takes on the knock-down arguments and jibes of popular atheists like Dawkins and Hitchens in a similar vein of knock-about debate, this is not your book, though it does discuss and dispute them. For that, the reader should go Dinesh D'Souza's What's So Great About Christianity? or one of several books that take these authors to task for their arrogance and ignorance, like Terry Eagleton's Reason, Faith, and Revolution or David Bentley Hart's Atheist Delusions. This book reminds me more of the 1981 film, My Dinner with Andre. Instead of dinner, though, Novak imagines a genial but spirited conversation (or series of conversations) over several brandies. (And I myself spent a few hours with this author, brandy in hand.) The real and imagined atheists who serve as his Alcibiades tend to be blunt, to the point, and commonsensical, like Wallace Shawn in the movie. Novak's replies are long and subtle, like Andre Gregory's in the film, but with less of the pretentious and more of sharp philosophical acuity. As Novak says and shows, it is much easier for a believer to put himself in the shoes of an atheist than the other way round.I recommend the book highly to atheists interested in an understanding of Jewish and Christian belief that goes beyond the usual objections and who are open to the possibility that those objections have been considered and responded to at a very high level of sophistication over centuries or millennia. But the book is also deeply enriching for believers who seek to understand their atheist friends and family members in way that respects them and is both civil and non-defensive. The book requires and rewards effort from both kinds of reader. For the closed-minded, whether atheist or believer, who are content to stay that way, this book is probably not for you.

I could pick many original ideas, but I refer on pages 43-48 as an example. On those pages Michel Novak gives "four arresting reflections" of Christianity. They are:1. A theology of the absurd2. The burden of sin3. The bright golden thread of human history4. The point of the cosmos is friendshipThese should arouse your curiosity for the book. I have never looked upon Christianity along those principles. This is one of the best books I have read lately. Novak points out that it is very easy for a Christian to understand atheism, but opposite seems to be true of many atheists. At least the books of the major proponents of atheism (Dawkins & Hitchens etc.) give this view. The major aim of the book is to improve the mutual understanding of people having different worldviews.

Should be read by believers and non-believers alike.

Novak is a thoughtful author with an immense intellectual depth and capacity. He deals humanely with an important subject that is "ripe" in our time. That subject is atheism and the problem of faith for believers in a period of unbelief and cynicism. He studiously and respectfully establishes common ground of thought and life that both atheists, non-believers and believers share. He shares his conclusions and beliefs while respectfully understanding that other conclusions can be drawn. Life does not spare anybody, we all wrestle with doubt.
