The Classic of the Mountains and Seas is a geographical gazetteer of ancient China and a catalogue of the natural and supernatural fauna and flora allegedly dating back to the 8th century BCE and spanning a period of perhaps a millennium. It is also a repository of strange spirits, curious folkways, medical beliefs, and other related oral and written traditions of earlier origins. In many ways, this Chinese classic bears some similarity in content and theme to the Hippocratic treatise "Airs, Waters, Places," although it is not commonly associated with being a part of the Chinese medical corpus as the latter is in Greek medicine. For, like this ancient Greek treatise, The Classic of the Mountains and Seas is based upon a philosophical and scientific premise of nature--the Chinese "Weltanschauung." The Chinese quest for a harmonious union between themselves and their biophysical and socioanthropological environment gave rise to such a "world concept" in which people and their way of reasoning were conceived of as being an integral part of the cosmos and intrinsically interjoined with the spiritual, physical, and moral "influences."Dr. Birrell's translation makes for an interesting read, with her scholarship enhancing our appreciation and understanding of this fascinating work. Her detailed Introduction is most helpful in acquainting the reader with the historical background of The Classic of the Mountains and Seas. Its shortcomings lie in its lack of numeric footnotes, a more specialized bibliography, a concordance with Romanization and Chinese equivalents, and her rendering of the place-names and denizens found in this zoomorphic setting. One can never be too careful when it comes to the translation of ancient Chinese words, for it is not uncommon to find that many of them have been vitiated by the bland assumption that they meant then what they mean in later dynastic periods; accordingly, such assumptions can be distorted or entirely false. One of the pleasures found in ancient languages lies in their implicitness, whereas, modern languages revel in their explicitness. Fortunately, the rich resources of English are capable of coping reasonably well with the varigated shades of the implicity found in the former. Dr. Birrell has attempted to avoid this pitfall, although I question some of her renderings as being too much of an effort to appeal to a more popular readership. For those readers wanting to further explore the many ethnographic features of this setting, the following works are recommended:(In Russian) E.M. Ianshina entitled, Katalog gor i morei (Shan Hai Tszin), or "A Catalogue of Mountains and Sea: The Classic of the Mountains and Seas."(In Chinese) Yuan Ke's Shan hai jing jiao zhu, or "A Critical Commentary on The Classic of the Mountains and Seas."(In French) Rémi Mathieu's two-volume Étude sur la Mythologie et L'ethnologie de la Chine Ancienne.(In English) Richard E. Strassberg's A Chinese Bestiary: Strange Creatures from the Guideways Through Mountains and Seas.

amazing imagery, endless fantastical realms populated with mythical creatures

The book is great, though one of the corners was slightly bent during shipping.

The reviews I read here for this book bamboozled me into buying it. I can only assume they are full time academics: no other explanation can be offered for their myopia. The book is admirably done, and the freeish rendering of Chinese mythological names is fine. The difficulty is that this is nothing but an extended catalogue, without stories or plot. It's a list. The descriptions are so unbelievably wierd that it's much fun to read for a page or two, but it's all so much the same, that after two paragraphs you've read it all. To call this a major source for Chinese mythology is simply untrue. Those interested in that subject should get a copy of The Journey to the West, or Chuang Tzu, or the stories of Pu Song Ling. To offer this to the reader as any sort of a narrative is an outright lie.The academic twits who have reviewed this so far do not seem to appreciate that just because a book's content is fictional doesn't make it fiction.

This ancient book is mythology, but in a different form. It is written like a geography, going from mountain to mountain and sea to sea. Like any reference book, it is not a cover-to-cover kind of read, but I found reading a little a day over morning espresso was habit forming. The translator uses literal translations for the names, which I prefer over the Pinyin names, since I can't read Chinese. So as we move through the mountain ranges, we meet such people as "the Corpse of Girl Deuce - she was born living, but the searing heat of the sun killed her. Her land lies north of the Grownman country. With her right hand Girl Deuce screened her face." For aspiring fantasy writers who want to get away from the same old tropes, this book has plenty of "new" material. For example, "there in the wilderness of Alldieyoung the Wonderbird sings freely and the Divine Wind bird dances freely." And: "The people of Alldieyoung hold an egg from the Divine Wind bird in each hand and eat it, while the two birds, the Wonderbird and Divine Wind, stay ahead of the people, leading them forward." There are also interesting new concepts, such as the worker gods. Why don't we have those? For purists who want the Chinese Pinyin names, such as San-shen (Threebody, country)there is an ample index at the back that covers the mythology in alphabetical order and includes Pinyin. I found that when I finished the book (it took a while) that I missed it over morning espresso. It was a very unique reading experience.

You really can't imagine walking in someone else's shoes, not with this story. No matter how we try to understand how they survived this was a mystery and a miracle. I understand that now. For the first half of the book I couldn't recommend it. Now I can. I think the first half of the book had important facts, but the second half has the heart and soul of the repercussions of the event. I feel the author did a wonderful job of writing enough details so that you felt you were there and not too many details to overwhelm you or wear you down with information you didn't need. He did an amazing job of reminding you about details of each person and their character. He was giving background information for each person, including family members, so that you could keep track of the changes. I think the reviews I read gave me too high of an expectation for this story. After having finished it I understand how involved a reader could be after learning details of the emotional struggles as the rescue took place and following their return to their home life. This does not mean the story will be appreciated by those who expect more action or for this story to change the readers life. Although it should make you appreciate simple things in your daily life.I do recommend going online and look at a map of the mine before you read this.

With just a few hours to go before their long-awaited deliverance, a few of the miners look back in wonder on their nine-week imprisonment in the bowels of the collapsed mine, the San Jose, in the mountains of Chile. Together, they'd feared certain death, spent weeks preparing to die, then watched what scant food they had slowly disappear.Soon, amazingly, it would actually be over. One of them looks around at the would-be tomb and feels a generous kind of wonder, a near reverence that transforms the dark pit of death into sacred ground. He actually writes a letter to leave behind, and signs it: "'Mario Sepulveda lived here from August 5 to October 13," then, with the note, adds some pictures he's recently given through the portal created when a giant drill finally bore its way down to them and opened up what seemed miraculous communication. Mario Sepulveda is awed by what he's been through. He's on his knees in reverence.Raul Bustos will have none of that. Bustos gathers rocks and flings them, one after another, into the abyss as if striking a beast now clumsily sauntering away into the darkness. He scribbles obscenities on the walls in permanent markers, blaming the mine owners for the misery he's gone through. "I wanted it all to go away," Bustos told Hector Tobar, who chronicled the entire story in Deep, Down Dark. With every bit of his being, Bustos wants the mine to disappear from his consciousness and the world's: "I didn't want anyone else to see it, to come and say later, 'See, look, this is where Raul Bustos slept.' It was all very private, and it was mine.""The earth is giving birth to its 33 children after having them inside her for two months and eight days." Victor Segovia, at the very same moment, looks back at what he and the others had gone through and sees something else altogether. Segovia had been the main chronicler of the miners' experiences, his memories and insights the only day-to-day written record of what exactly happened to 33 men trapped in the heat and night of a collapsed mine all of them believed would be a graveyard. Finally, Victor draws a heart inside his diary and writes "I LOVE SAN JOSE," because, Hector Tobar says, "the mine is like him: flawed and neglected but worthy of respect and love."How three men react to the very same awful experience--just over two months of near starvation in the dark neighborhood of death--is a marvel because we are, all of us, somehow perfectly unique. There are no clones. One of the men makes the tomb a cathedral, another a veritable hell, yet another casts the darkness as a lover. All three men are thoughtful; all three men are deadly serious. All three men have undergone an experience unlike anything anyone else in the entire world has, and now all three are about to be delivered into life up on the surface of the earth, into light, and love. But when they look back, what they see couldn't be more different."What a piece of work is man," says Hamlet. He doesn't mean it as a question, but a utterance of sheer awe at the seeming incongruities we embody as human beings. In Psalm 8, the poet says humans look so immensely feeble against a backdrop of the glorifying heavens: "What are we that you care about us?" the psalmist says, "that you have crowned us with glory and honor?" But he has.Amazing. Just amazing. What those many days beneath the earth did is little more than compress life in a way that every one of those 33 men understood, even though as it ended they regarded what had happened to them with night-and-day differences. They'd gone a long ways down the road toward death. And then returned. As amazing at it sounds, their story, as told by Hector Tobar in Deep Down Dark: The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chilean Mine and the Miracle that Set Them Free, as amazing and truly unique as it was, is our story too.No one reading these words spent all that time buried in the earth, fighting for life, looking for meaning. Yet, strange as it sounds, all of us do. What makes Hector Tobar's book so moving and memorable is that somehow we are there in the mine with them, all of us.

Even though you know how the story ends, you don't know until you read this book, how the men were affected by their time trapped underground. The author does a great job of giving the reader a picture of what it was like from the miners perspectives based on a journal kept by one of the men and interviews with them and their families (obviously done after the event, by skillfully woven throughout the telling of the story). The mine's collapse is recounted in such a way that you feel the fear and dread the miners experienced. There is a large cast of characters (33), but the author does an excellent job of describing their personalities and emotions; their fears and hopes. It's a powerful story and sad. Even though they all survive (and I'm not giving anything away if you're familiar with the news accounts), all is not necessarily well when they return to their lives above ground. A must read if you're interested in the human spirit and how people persevere in times of disaster. These men are quite remarkable!

It's difficult to admit that twice I cried in reading a story who's plot had been spoiled by the evening news years ago. But this book tells a clear and intimate story of how these working class men -- and their families on the surface -- persevered through their ordeal. As the view first focuses on some of the entombed, and then to introduce their family, and then on to events that include others, and then to their families, this well planned portrayal is detailed yet never droll. The followup on lives after freedom tells of the ongoing traumatizing effects on those involved, as the world's attention moves on and assumes that all will be well.

This is a blank journal with quotes and a few faded pictures in the background that you can write over all based on the excellent A Series of Unfortunate Events. It is pretty small which makes it easy to pack in a book bag. It is hard back and nicely done.Overall if you are a fan of A Series of Unfortunate Events, you'll enjoy this journal.

loved it

I wish this book had the same Matte finish as the books in the Series, but instead it has a Glossy cover! It sticks out like a sore thumb. :-(

It's a blank journal. The description says nothing about a blank journal. I can buy one at the dollar store for oh, about a dollar. I hope there aren't too many disappointed kids who pre-ordered. My daughter said, "Send it back!" That's what we will be doing.

Amazon did not disclose that this is a blank note book. this is VERY WRONG.Now I have to go to the trouble of returning it. And in TOP OF THAT, I was alerted by an e-mail to pre-order it, leading me to believe this was a new book...!!!Why is Amazon resorting to such methods??

I do not know how Amazon marketed this book, but my notifcation email from the publisher, HarperCollins, clearly stated that this was a blank journal. It sounds like some people are disappointed with Amazon, but that should not cause them to give this wonderful journal just one star. This hardback journal has lined pages and is full of original illustrations and also some of the wittiest quotes from the books. The whole mood of the journal fits so well with the books that it is a must have for any Lemony Snicket fan who needs a new commonplace book. It is beautifully done and something that was long overdue.

This is a very nice commonplace book for the fans of A Series of Unfortunate events. Nicely bound, and quotes from the books are scattered throughout the pages.I am not sure why everyone else is so upset about this book. It is fairly obvious it is not a new book. The title doesn't match new books, the price isn't the same, it came out only 6 months after the most recent edition (book 12), and in the listing I see, it says, "(Journal)". The cover doesn't even look like the cover of one of the books in the series.Must-have for the Baudelaire fan who wishes to keep his or her own journal.

This was an awesome find for Christmas. My stepdaughter is a big fan of the Series of Unfortuante Events and is an avid journaler. This book is great with it's quotes from the books at the bottom (or top?) of each page. She loves it.
