Of all the many bad books on the market that deal with raw food for dogs (and cats), this is one of the less bad ones, but that doesn't make it a good or even an okay book. Kymythy Schultze covers some nutritional basics (and errs on a few, but so do all of them). and she relays why a raw diet is generally preferable for a dog (or cat), but she leaves out any and all specific information that would help anyone interested in providing a raw diet for their pets with true hands-on tips. There are no easy-to-follow "recipes." There are no tables showing the percentage of bone content of the various bone-in meats. And so on.We're also not learning about additional benefits of feeding a species-appropriate raw diet - which would include feeding large bone-in chunks of meat. Eating isn't just meant to consume food, it is also meant to engage the mind and the body during the feeding process, which the ground mushy diet Schultze is recommending can not provide. Big chunks that require massive chewing do also serve as the canine (and feline) way of dental cleaning, so feeding mush isn't going to help with that either.All in all, a disappointment, but no quite as bad as some of the others, such as Carina Beth Macdonald's "Raw Dog Food," which is truly horrific.
I liked the book. The author was clear and to the point and used simple anecdotes to illustrate her points. She doesn't give just recipes; she tells you why each ingredient is essential, or of it is not. She gives options for meeting nutritional requirements for your pet (cat or dog). She also discusses some of the pros and cons of a raw diet, which clear up some myths out there.All-in-all she was very thorough.The only drawbacks for me are the time to prepare the food and the cost of high quality ingredients. These are easily overcome with a new perspective gained from this informative book.
This is a quick read with helpful information and can function as a good reference for the novice raw feeder. But there is one big fault with the Kindle edition. The "sample monthly menu" is impossible to read on any screen, not on my iPad and not on my laptop. Additionally the "sample monthly menu" can’t be copied and pasted into WORD for image correction or extrapolation.
My Parent's beloved Lhasa, Victoria was 9 years old and beginning to slow down and bald, when a friend handed me this book. I shared the content with my Mom who said she would never feed raw meat to her dog! Then I sent her the book and after reading it, she hesitantly took Victoria off her premium dry dog food and began feeding her according to Ms. Schultze recommendations; raw eggs, bones and all! Victoria had never enjoyed her dry food and had to be coaxed into eating it. Not so with this Diet! She devoured it, heartily! Within days of beginning the Diet, Victoria came back to 'life'! She began having 'puppy crazies' again and within months, the fur on her sweet head began to grow back thick and glossy! My Mom's Vet saw her several months after starting the Diet and was in shock. She had to know what Mom had done to effect such a dramatic change! When Mom shared her knowlege about the Diet, the Vet was skeptical but the proof that was right before her was unrefutable so she encouraged Mom to continue feeding Victoria Raw. For the next seven years, Victoria flourished on raw meat, raw veggies, uncooked bones, raw eggs and Flax Seed Oil. She never developed any profound illnesses and passed away peacefully at 16 years old! I now have 5 dogs on our Farm and they are all fed this way. We have no illness amongst our Canine Farmily and they all have sparkling teeth and glossy coats. This is the way Dogs should eat. Get the book! Try the Diet! Your Dog will thank you!
This book is concise and well written. As with many dog owners, I was intrigued by raw feeding but never knew how to start. This book answered many of my questions and we are on our way to feeding the Ultimate Diet to our pups.
You need a lot more than this if you're planning your pets' nutrition needs. I had a lot to consider with my dog with intestinal problems (something similar to IBS with frequent bloody diarrhea). If you're going to mess with this please do more studying, it's not at all simple and your pet cannot tell you what is wrong if you miss something. DON'T do this on a whim, ONLY use it as a guide to help with specific needs. A good vet will help you, a bad vet will not, if your vet will not help then it's time to find a new vet.
I loved this book. Have been "wondering" about commercial dog food for years. When we got a new dog (a 2 yr old) I kept her on the dog food that she was used to. Noticed that she would bite at her skin and dig at her ears. Finally decided to educated myself on homemade foood. This book took the mystery out of it. It is very clear and easy to follow. My goldie is 3 and a half now, and never digs or scratches herself. She has a beautiful coat, and tons of energy.
Love the book. Easy to read and follow. Sample menus for your dog or cat depending on weight. If you're thinking of switching to raw for your pet this book definitely helps.
