Review

"The editorial work accomplished by Heer and Worcester is simply impressive. Not only have they managed to gather material that is challenging, well-written, well-thought and that should enable a big leap forward in comics theory and criticism, but the two editors have also succeeded in giving each text the necessary space and context." - Jan Baetens, Image & Narrative"Since academics have helped legitimize comics as an art form to be taken seriously, it only makes sense that an entire book of scholarly essays put illustrated fiction under the microscope. It very well could serve as the required reading for that course I never had the opportunity to ace." Rod Lott, Oklahoma Gazette"Jeet Heer and Kent Worcester have, once again, performed admirably in producing another compendious survey of comics scholarship. Their earlier effort in this vein, Arguing Comics: Literary Masters on a Popular Medium, scanned the historical landscape for essays about comics written by various literary critics and the like; their current production, A Comics Studies Reader, compiles 28 essays by contemporary scholars and critics. The result is a sort of panorama of current serious thinking about the art of cartooning in all its forms."Robert C. Harvey

There's really not much to say here apart from what you most probably already know. This is a reader and as such it does what every reader out there does - offers a variety of texts on a certain topic. You might have already guessed (if you're the sort of person who reads the title of the book that you want to buy) what that topic is. Now, this is not the place for lengthy discussion about every article that has been published within these covers (most of them are reprints or excerpts from other books of the same authors), there are specialized pages out there for that sort of work, so I'll skip that part because I'm a relatively sane person. I'll just put down few remarks which you might find useful. Or not, but hey, you never can tell. Anyhow, this reader offers good introduction to the field of modern-day comics studies. Texts vary from discussions about the history of the medium, discussions about formal characteristics of the medium, interpretations and in-depth analysis of various works from a variety of theoretical backgrounds. Authors heavily rely on the Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics" (in a polemic sort of way; some authors are in agreement with McCloud's definitions, some try to either change, adapt or refute them) and though one might argue that editors chose contributions about some of the most well-known comics out there, ignoring the underground movements and comics that do not come from the largest markets in the world, reader actually offers quite a nice overview of various traditions that are currently present and kicking. Bibliography is quite extensive and every interested scholar will find plenty information if it happens that some of the topics that are discussed here catch his attention. There is a lack of quality reproduction of comics themselves though, which is quite important considering the nature of comics as a primarily visual medium. One can speculate about reasons for this omission (main one probably being the cost of the full-color reproduction which would undoubtedly influence the final price of already expensive product), one might even understand them though one can't fail to notice them and feel a certain regret. Since comics studies is relatively new academic endeavor this reader should come in handy if you plan to introduce a similar course in your own academic institution or if you're just an independent scholar trying to get a grasp about comics and their place in contemporary Art. Authors of the contributions come from various backgrounds and though some of them read as a fairly conventional fan-made research (types of which one can find all over the internet if one looks for it long enough), majority of them write in familiar academic discourse that reads clearly, is well researched, and well executed. Overall, this is the title for both the professors and students alike, one that should definitely be a part of your own University library or the private library of your own.

A little dense sometimes, but it's really good to think about comics on a deeper level.

At last, comics studies got its own legitimate places in between the study of culture, pop-art, and visual aesthetics.

Excellent book selection for learning the history of comics!

The original Pete the Cat book that I read with my toddler grandson (age 3) is called "Pete the Cat, I love My White Shoes." It was written by Eric Litwin and illustrated by James Dean. "I Love my White Shoes" is by far one of the best books I've found for grabbing the attention and having reading-fun with a kid this age. This series, however, is not written by Eric Litwin. James Dean is both the writer and illustrator, and Eric Litwin does not seem to be involved."Go, Pete, Go" may be good for older Pre-schoolers, but it lacks the inventive fun and imagination of the Litwin book and is bogged down with details that I don't think move the story forward with excitement. It's a version of "The Turtle and the Hare"

I was disappointed that there was no song in this story because my toddlers love to "read" the songs in the Pete the Cat books as they sing them from memory. I would have knocked off an additional star, but my 4 year old year was happy enough with the story and wanted 4 stars. It is a cute story. My son thinks a turtle in a race car is hilarious, but he doesn't think Pete can "really" ride a bike.

Purchased this for our neighbors son for Christmas. I work in an elementary school library, and the kids all love Pete the Cat. Highly recommend any of the Pete the Cat books!

I buy these for my granddaughter in Georgia. She will be 4 in May 2018. She loves Pete the Cat & looks forward to these books & all Petes escapades. I love how the books can grow with her & they offer so many different stories for different things going on & holidays etc. she loves to FaceTime with me at bedtime when her mom reads her a book especially when it’s a Pete the Cat book! I will definitely keep buying her these books.

This is the second Pete story I am buying because my daughter loves it. I was surprised she knows Pete and was able to tell me the story. I had read it to her only twice so I got this one for her. Halfway through reading I realized she was falling asleep so I stopped reading. Only to hear her ask "you finish the story already?" Will buy more in thus collection for her.

The rhyming Pete the Cat books are the best. The others... not as good. Riding on reputation of originals.

Great book for beginners. My son loves the Pete the Cat series and I can see why. great illustrations along with funny stories really makes the series a blast to follow. books are durable but not plastic coated paper so be careful with them. Artwork is fantastic and really gets kids into the story.

My grandson enjoyed reading Pete the Cat, Go, Pete, Go! book. He can't wait to find out what happens at the end of the story. I would recommend these books to other friends and family members with children who enjoys reading, and the desire with exceling in reading.

Mr. Tim Conway is a very funny man...I remember first seeing him as the stumbling, bumbling Ensign Charles Parker in McHale's Navy and then later on the Carol Burnett Show, together with his own, short-lived show, where he again teamed up with Joe Flynn. Tim's ability to make people laugh and see the funny side of almost any situation in life are probably second to none.It was therefore quite hilarious to read about how he came to be in show business and read about his exploits off camera through the years as well. It seems Tim just genuinely sees life as an amusing journey where he naturally syncs in to applying humour to it. For example when attending a party he wrapped his face in paper to resemble a 'Mummy' and then had someone take a photo of him, which he then clipped and slid into his license. Later, when pulled over by the police (and still wearing his 'Mummy' make up), he offered up his altered license. Fortunately the policeman had a sense of humour. Or his encounter with fellow comedian Don Knotts, who was dressed as a woman at the time, in a Bar.I liked this book immensely as I found Tim's journey through life a very funny read and marvelled at how the author to whom he narrated these accounts to, was able to stay focused on capturing the essence of Tim Conway the man and the comedy genius. For anyone who remembers Tim in his early TV and movie appearances and wonders how he evolved into such a funny man, this book is a definite reading pleasure. In summary a very well written and amusing account of probably one of the most funniest veteran 'funny men' still active today. Well done, Mr. Conway and thank you for showing us that life is not so serious after all!

Tim Conway is one of the funniest comedians that I have ever seen on television. And, he's honest. In his book, he admits that his humor is best taken when he is a "second banana" on a TV show, and not trying to carry the show by himself. This was a delightful look at his life. I laughed out loud many times as he tells of his childhood, his adventures in the Army and his show business career. I highly recommend it.

Tim Conway is a real treasure, a funny man who believes in comedy. I was highly entertained by this delightful entertainer, with tales of his memories and stories of his shenanigans. "What's So Funny?" is a warm, feel-good book, and it will allow you to bask in his wonderment of the world. I loved it.

Of course, we all love Tim Conway. Just to hear his name is to "flashback" to Ensign Parker of McCale's Navy, and "the Dentist" etc. Well, this book tells you so much more about the background scenes to his shows. The main thing about the book is the "know the man" Tim Conway. When reading this book always remember that Babe Ruth was baseball's home run king, but at the same time, he had 700 strike outs. The reason I don't give this book "5 stars" is because (and maybe it's because its the Kindle version) the photos are all at the end and not interspersed among the chapters. Would have been easier to have the photo match the subject.

Tim Conway is one of the good ones - a truly nice guy who never misses an opportunity to do what he does best: make people laugh. His autobiography is filled with laughs, as he takes the reader from his childhood in Ohio through McHale's Navy, the Carol Burnett Show, Dorf, and more. If you are old enough to remember his most prominent TV work, this book will bring back fond recollections of some iconic broadcast moments. If you're not, you owe it to yourself to find out what you missed. Either way, you'll enjoy finding out "what's so funny" about Tim Conway's hilarious life.

What a fascinating story of Tim Conway's time in showbiz. If you loved him on Carol Burnett, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. Who knew this funny man knew so much about horses and had wanted to be a jockey before he outgrew that option. Lots of great anecdotes about his pals on the Burnett show, as well as "McHale's Navy." I couldn't put it down!

I really enjoyed this book! This man is so crazy, but in a good way. I enjoyed finding out about his childhood and how he grew up. You learn about his parents. They were interesting and a little nutty-especially his father. Some of the things his father did were very dangerous because his fatherthought they were OK. For instance,he overloaded the electrical outlet.(remember,in the 50's there were not too many in houses)and disaster followed. His father worked with horses in Ireland and continued to do so when he came here.Tim helped and wantedto be a jockey! So glad he got too big or we would have missed out on many laughs! You learn more about his relationship with Harvey Korman and Carol Burnett. They all really loved each other and were devastatedwhen the show (Carol Burnett) ended. This is a fast read and enjoyable! Go for it!

This book is so amazing - like sitting in your favorite most comfortable chair in your living room and listening to the very funny and loving down-home person of Tim Conway. He is a very talented person beyond his comic self and shares so much of his inner self. The book is written and there's never a dull moment throughout!
